Julierpass - Switzerland
A very green mountain-pass in the swiss south leading towards Silvaplana.
We are once again in the swiss highlands for this one. The Julierpass is the main connection from the city of Chur to the southeast of the country. The weather that day forced me to do the Drivelapse from the inside this time, as the camera wouldn't have liked that much water.
The road starts with a drive along a hydro-dam, beautiful mountains and forests in sight. It is not very challenging to drive, at least compared to other entries here, so you'll have more time to gaze at the panorama around you.
Very shortly after the dam, the trees make room for lush green fields. This treeline comes very suddenly, switching from dense forest to nothing, which makes you wonder if it is a man-made cut. Anyway, the lack of forest always has the side-effect of more view, which comes in very handy now.
Swirling through the fields you reach a point of several hairpins. Technically this would actually classify as spaghetti-road according to my own definition, but this one is actually fun to drive. And this is because of two key differences to other spaghetti-roads:
1. Wide Hairpins. I drove most of them above 50 kmh, if I remember correctly. This means they don't break the driving flow and intensity of the drive. They are still curves rather than turns like at intersections.
2. Virtually no straights. The outflow of one hairpin leads directly into the next. You're setting up your vehicle for the next corner-entry the second you leave the last one. This circumvents the boredom of accelerating and braking in straight lines over and over again.
So this is a very rare case of spaghetti-ing up a mountain, that is not only interesting to look at, but also fun to drive. The part is also not overly long, so it doesn't get repetitive. Once you cross the top, the road actually becomes quite boring to drive honestly, but the landscape actually doubles in beauty. So you can admire the rocky giants, while coasting down the other side. If you're ever in the area, make sure to give this one a try.
