Just Another Reason why We Love Pickup Trucks

Practical, great value and safe...well, safer than before...

Pickup trucks are, not only continuing to be the best-selling vehicles in the United States, but also in many other countries! Carbuzz states that bakkies are becoming so popular that many individuals are swapping their luxury vehicles for pickups, high trim pickups. In the past there was a massive difference between a car and a pickup, however now pickups are becoming more car-like...more luxurious. Some consumers love this, however there are some individuals that are against this movement. Nevertheless, this trend will continue and maybe, just maybe start threatening the luxury market.

The article states that there is now yet another reason to swap out your car for a pickup. We see many articles about safety, because safety is a big concern. A few years ago, many pick trucks were not safe, definitely not as safe as most luxury cars. However, automakers have been making huge strides to overcome aforementioned concern.

Even though pickup trucks have an advantage in a crash due to their mass, their structural integrity hasn't always been acceptable.

Interestingly, the small overlap test has been one of the toughest challenges for bakkies. What is an overlap test? In this test the pickup needs to hit an object (only partially) avoiding much of the car's vital crash structure. So, Ford passed the test with their F-150 by installing wheel blockers on the frame. Carbuzz continues to state that the 2019 Ram 1500 also has wheel blockers as well as a more spread out frame.

So what about the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra? These pickups have also made similar changes.

To sum up, pickup trucks are getting much safer! This will encourage many new buyers to make the switch. Would you make the switch?

  • Trucks are great. I got into a high spec F-150 at last year Harrisburg Outdoors Show - it was like "honey, I'm home". You drive around in a house. In Europe, a huge truck feels too big. Hard to navigate, hard to park. Unnecessary. But here in the US, where the whole country feels like it had been scaled up by 50%? Hey, bring it on.
