Kamui Kobayashi smashes the Le Mans lap record

Toyota's Kamui Kobayashi has obliterated the Le Mans track record in qualifying for this year's 24 hours.

The ex-F1 driver went round in a stonking 3:14.791 to put the #7 Toyota on provisional pole.

Kobayashi's time was two seconds quicker than the previous best on the current layout, set by Porsche's Neel Jani in 2015.

Indeed, his lap was so quick it beat the 1985 pole time by a tenth, which was set when the circuit had four fewer corners (including the Dunlop Chicane).

Sensational stuff.

For the record, this is the old lap record (Neel Jani's comparatively pedestrian 3:16.8).
