The Concept 4
BMW Concept 4
The Concept 4 was unveiled at this year's International Auto Show IAA in Frankfurt, Germany, and it was probably the most noticed car at the stand of the bavarian company. It caused controversy even amongst the most die-hard BMW-fans. But why is that?
If you've seen pictures or videos of it, you already know why. But to be fair here, let's have a walk around the whole car first:
As you approach the Concept 4 from the back, you really get a sense of excitement. It's wide, muscular and falls perfectly in line with the recent design-language of the brand. The idea behind the Concept 4 is to show what we can expect from the upcoming 4-Series, which is set to be released in early 2020. I especially like the simplistic taillights in the shape of what BMW themselves call the "heartbeat"-shape. I imagine they are designed to reflect the drivers' heartbeat as he drives the 4-Series on the german autobahn - pretty cool! Let's hope the whole back carries over into production.
The side looks pretty as well!
Not only on the back, but also the side, the designers seem to have made no mistakes whatsoever. It is beautiful to look at and I haven't heard anybody disagreeing with that. Classic proportions and very view disturbing lines (especially by BMW-standards) create an astonishing shape - can't wait to see the front!
Apparently, size does matter after all. At least to BMW.
Oh dear... I don't know who is responsible for the trend of ever-increasing grille sizes, but I really hate him. Just look at that thing. Even with a lot of goodwill and comprehension of the demands of the chinese market - this is too much for me. BMW continued what they've started with the Vision iNext in 2018 and what they have already been made fun of when the X7 and the new 7-Series have been released. I've heard some people say that nobody cares if Audi or Lexus keep increasing the size of their grilles, but in my opinion, big sizes don't suit BMWs traditional kidney-grille at all while other shapes do a little bit better with the enlargement. They destroyed the whole car with this grille!
Because I adore the rest of the car, I tried to re-design the front end of the Concept 4. It just deserves better than this.
The first step was obviously to remove the current grille and by doing that I noticed how good it looks with no grille at all - much like an awesome looking american muscle car. Take a look:
I definetly get some 'stang-vibes from this
At first, I wanted to keep vertical kidneys like older BMWs had in the 70s, but as I modified the front bumper, I realized they don't suit the rest of the vehicle very well. Instead, I went for more of a Chris-Bangle-era like shape, although I kept the new pattern inside of the kidneys. As I liked the muscle-car-look without a grille very much, I decided to make the kidneys look like they are coming from a seperate layer beneath the hood. That way, the "big mouth" is beeing kept. Additionally, I changed the side air-intake a little bit to bring a vertical shape to the front as well.
Here's my version of the Concept 4 next to the original:
Please tell me in the comments if you like the changes I've made or if you actually like the original version with the big grille better. Thank you for reading all the way through!
