Kyle Larson To Drive The 5 Car In 2021
Larson has been reinstated and signed to Hendrick Motorsports
Kyle Larson Just announced he has signed a multiyear deal with Hendrick Motorsports. He will be driving the #5 car, leaving the 42 and the Ganassi Racing team after an indefinite suspension imposed earlier this season during an iRacing Event. He’s set to be driving a Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE at the start of next season.
His team will be headed by Cliff Daniels, who will have previously been the crew chief of Jimmie Johnson and the 48 car in his farewell season in Nascar.
In a comment, Larson stated:
“Hendrick Motorsports is a championship organization that has set a high bar for performance and for how drivers represent the team and its partners. [My] goal is to win races, be a great teammate, continue my personal efforts to grow and hold myself to that high standard personally and professionally. Making the absolute most of this platform and the opportunity in front of me is my focus. I know what’s expected of me and what I expect of myself, on and off the track.”
Larson’s reinstatement followed through on October 19th, prior to which he was to complete sensitivity training, due to his use of a racial slur on live streamed iRacing. He has since devoted much of his time to programs focused on diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Kyle Larson will join Alex Bowman (#48), Chase Elliot, and William Byron at the start of next season, whom have a cumulative 18 Cup Series victories and 18 playoff starts. The #5 car was last driven by Kasey Kahne, and Larson will be only the tenth driver in Nascar history to drive the 5 car for Hendrick Motorsports.
Hendrick stated: “I’m excited about our roster of young talent,” Hendrick added. “We have a team that is built to win races and compete for championships for years to come.”
Larson fans everywhere share that excitement.
