Lamborghini is an Italian brand famous all around the world, the Miura and Countach of the good old days are models very loved by petrolheads of any age, as well of the new ones, like the Huracàn or the Aventador but there are so many amazing models among the ones produced by the raging bull house.

Let's have a look at the Espada!

The Espada is another model born by the lucky collaboration between Lamborghini and Bertone, the famous group of car styling and couch-builders experts who collaborated with several car manufacturers as Ferrari, Lancia, Aston Martin and many more.

Produced between 1968 and 1978 the Espada was a Four seat Grand Turismo coupé, based on two previous concept cars designed by Marcello Gandini from Bertone, the Lamborghini Marzal, an attempt to do a real 4 seat Gran Turismo and the Jaguar Pirana, a car commissioned at the time by the Daily Telegraph as publicity stunt for the 1967 edition of the London Motor Show.

The Espada was based on the mechanic of the 400 GT and was a perfect mix between the futuristic lines of the Marzal and the innovative design previously portrayed on the Pirana. A mighty V12 engine was fitted in the middle and thanks to the particular shape of the car there was enough room for four people in the inside.

The interiors were quite luxurious for the time, air condition and electric windows, were standard optional in the car, like the leather interiors and dashboard, more optional were available, seat belts, radio with musicassette player and in the VIP version a mini-bar and a television placed between the front seats.

After ten years and 1217 unit produced, the Espada end its run, in behalf of the Countach and of the new management line who wanted Lamborghini focus on two seat sports cars.

Anyway this car was indeed a success in terms of sells and design, with its particular shape and such refined interiors, for a 70's style lover as I am this is for sure along the Silhouette and Jarama one of my favorite models of that period.

  • Lovely. It's probably my favourite Lambo after the Miura.

  • A time when Lamborghinis looked great! Miss those days. Jarama looked even nicer, I reckon. Sad what the Lamborghinis look today.

    • Well...the Huracan looks pretty good in my opinion, but I agree, the charme of the old models is unreachable and not only for lambos but for every car manufacturer
