Lando Norris proves his skills by sliding the McLaren M8D in the wet at Goodwood
Last weekend’s Festival of Speed at Goodwood was a roaring success, partly thanks to the ideal sunny weather that shone for most of the event. In fact, on the last day, it took a turn for the worst with the early part of the day being hit by showers.
It was on the last day that McLaren F1 driving superstar and internet meme lord Lando Norris got the chance to drive the mighty 1970 McLaren M8D Can-Am racecar. As if the 670hp from the Chevrolet produced 7.6-litre V8 wasn’t enough to contend with, the rain most certainly was.
With the lack of grip, the young 19-year-old slid the Can-Am racer like a seasoned pro whilst pleasing the crowd lining the track. Not only are the drifts and huge burnouts impressive to watch, the roar of the American V8 is a joy to hear.
Not long after the event concluded, McLaren announced that it would stick with the same line-up of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris for the 2020 Formula 1 season. Although the duo have managed to seemingly bring McLaren out of the dark ages of running at the back of the mid-field, maybe the British team saw an extra glimmer when the drivers took to the Goodwood hill.
In fact, it’s still very early in the year to be announcing next year’s drivers as we still aren’t at the half way point in the current season. Clearly then, McLaren has been very impressed by the two young drivers – and his impressive display of skill at Goodwood won't have done Norris any harm!
