Late Braking Interviews Dan Ticktum.

We here at Late Braking were lucky enough to get a few words from Dan who recently joined the Red Bull Junior Team.

LB: Who inspired you to start racing?

DT: My dad was my first inspiration – he really got me into it and then it was my love for cars that made me want to race. When I was very young, I wasn’t really watching it on TV but as I grew older, Schumacher became a great inspiration.

LB: How did you find the testing for BRDC Award last year? 3 different categories of cars in two days must have been tough but massively enjoyable!

DT: It was a great experience and I enjoyed all of it to be honest. I never really get nervous so I just had to leave no stone unturned and approach everything with the correct attitude and perform as best as I could.

LB: What are your goals for the 2018 season? Is a full season in GP3 on the cards?

DT: I’ll be racing in European Formula 3 with Team Motopark in 2018 so I’ll be hoping to do very well in that.

LB: Having been signed to the Red Bull Junior Programme in 2017, have you found that it has helped your driving?

DT: The Red Bull programme is amazing - it encourages you to grow and develop yourself but equally, it can be quite hands-off in terms of driver tuition, which encourages you to get on with things. It has given me great confidence, which has helped me as a person to progress and ultimately improved my racing.

LB: What is your favourite circuit?

DT: Macau. It has always been my favourite track – even before I won the Macau Grand Prix last year – but now it’s even more special to me.

LB: If you could race alongside any Formula 1 driver, past or present, who would it be?

DT: James Hunt.

LB: What has been your best late braking overtake? (We hope you say your overtake on Lando Norris and Maximillian Gunther at Macau because that was mega)

DT: Going around the outside of Lando Norris and Max Gunther in Macau has to be my best late braking overtake yet.

LB: If you weren't a racing driver what would you be?

DT: If I wasn’t a racing driver, I would probably be studying for something business related and then I would be doing music as a semi-serious hobby and if it went anywhere, I’d go down the music route.

LB: Congrats on your win at the Macau GP at the end of last year, that was a crazy finish! What were you thinking as you rounded the final corner and found the two guys in front of you in the barriers?

DT: I didn’t really know what was happening! For the whole race, I was very calm and knew exactly what was going on but when I saw the two guys in the barriers and I crossed the line, I wasn’t sure if it was definitely the last lap. I had no idea what was going on, it was so, so mad. And then I realised I’d won about halfway down the straight. And that was that, really. I was pretty surprised to say the least. There isn’t really a word to describe how surprised I was!

LB: Do you have any quirky/specific pre-race routines? (i.e. type of music/food/drink, etc.)

DT: No, I am not very superstitious. I don’t really have any specific things that I rely on. I obviously do a warm up with stretching and the quick reaction exercises before a race but I don’t have a specific song I need to listen to. Definitely no special pants or anything like that!

LB: Who do you think is going to win the 2018 Formula 1 title?

DT: I would like to say Max and Red Bull but realistically I’m not sure the engine is going to be good enough which is a shame. So, I would probably put my money on Hamilton again.

    • Yeah he’s shown real promise and it’s great to see Red Bull give him a real chance, we could see him in the higher formula soon
