Let me tell you what car news matters this week
A big face, a shiny new sports car, 200mph with the top down, and shifting gears on your own? This is your news round up
BMW’s 7 Series becomes shy and retiring
There’s a new 7 Series luxobarge out and oh boy does it have a BIG FACE. While BMW wants you to pay attention to its shiny new iDrive, rear touchscreens, and smarter airflow management, all I can really see is the updated kidney grille. It looks as though the pre-facelift car has had a particularly nasty reaction to a bee sting.
BMW’s going pretty heavy on the hallmark grille of late (see the X7 and I Vision Dynamics Concept), but this is getting a little silly. Dame Edna wants her glasses back.
McLaren’s 600LT Spider is for people who want to be seen at 200mph
Say what you will about McLaren using the LT name as a codeword for ‘the quick one’, the 600LT Spider looks properly good. The 570S Spider is arguably the looker of the ‘lesser’ range, so giving the 600LT the drop top treatment is a very good thing.
You can cruise at silly illegal speeds and work on your tan at the same time. Oh, and EXHAUSTS THAT SHOOT FIRE are part of the deal. Tag me in.
Ford’s having a go at making a supercar rivalling Mustang
The Detroit show was pretty lacklustre this year (isn’t it always?), but one of the two big stories to fly out of the Motor City was Ford’s new Shelby Mustang GT500.
It comes with a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 and over 700bhp, which is a lot. It’s also packing a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which has upset people. They want to change gear themselves and feel all important and special in the process. Except… the people who are complaining aren’t the types to actually put their money where their mouths are, are they?
There’s a reason performance cars are all going auto – people simply aren’t buying fast manuals any more. And the few that do can’t really justify the development costs. Other than that, it looks angry and will be fast. Oh, and it’ll likely go around corners rather nicely.
Super new Supra ?
In case you missed it, there’s a new Supra – the other big story from Detroit. It’ll cost upwards of £50k and looks pretty mean. Toyota will sell lots.
