Lewis Hamilton vs Nico Rosberg goes off-road!
The Electric Odyssey launches in the desert, and MotoGP dazzles in Qatar!
As avid fans of so many different motorsport series like F1, MotoGP, WRC and more, we wanted to share our love of racing on 4 (or 2) wheels in our own unique and often hilarious way. Every Tuesday we will be releasing a new video discussing all the key moments from the previous week’s motorsport, so you can stay up to date about all your favourite championships! This week for our second video we covered Extreme E, a brand-new electric off-road racing series, and the 2nd round of the MotoGP championship in Qatar!
First devised by Alejandro Agag, Extreme E is basically an ‘electric sprint version of Dakar’, featuring 9 teams each competing in a standardised electric SUV called the ODYSSEY 21. They are expected to take part in 5 events across the world, with each location highlighting an environment that is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including deserts, glaciers, rainforests, and oceans. Where other traditional motorsports will typically travel between races by road and air, Extreme E will voyage around the globe by boat, using the refurbished ‘St Helena’ ship in order to minimise the overall carbon footprint of this new series. Extreme E has also addressed gender equality by requiring each team to run 1 male and 1 female driver, a unique approach not yet seen in other championships!
Extreme E kicked off last week for the Desert X Prix in Al- ‘Ula, Saudi Arabia, and it certainly didn’t disappoint! A highly challenging environment which pushed the teams to their limits and really showcased the skill and bravery of the drivers. Rosberg X Racing won the qualifying round, piloted by triple Rallycross champion Johan Kristofferson and Molly Taylor, with Lewis Hamilton’s X44 team coming in 2nd, driven by 9-time rally champion Sebastian Loeb and Cristina Gutierrez. Andretti United suffered a puncture during their qualifying run, but Catie Munnings spectacularly kept the car under control on only 3 wheels to qualify for the crazy race with teammate Timmy Hansen. Problems for JB XE, driven by team owner & F1 champion Jenson Button and Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky, Veloce Racing, driven by Stephane Sarrazin and Jamie Chadwick, and ABT Cupra XE, piloted by Mattias Ekstrom and Claudia Hurtgen, put them out of contention for a podium place, and will be hoping for better luck at the Ocean X Prix in Senegal. Rosberg X Racing and X44 made it through to the final race with Andretti joining them after a dominant victory in the crazy race. Hansen showed his talent once again in the final after a brilliant start to take the lead… that was until Kristofferson performed an incredible switchback on the Andretti car to move into 1st place, quite possibly the move of the weekend! Molly Taylor got in the car for the second lap and drove with superior confidence to win the first ever Extreme E event for RXR, followed by Andretti and X44, setting us up for a season-long showdown between Hamilton and Rosberg!
Round 2 of MotoGP took place under the lights in Losail for a second consecutive week, with the Pramac Racing Ducati’s making the best start once again and polesitter Jorge Martin leading for most of the race. With superior top speed versus their rivals, they looked strong enough to win the race, however the Monster Energy Yamaha riders of Fabio Quatararo and round 1 winner Maverick Vinales started working their way through the order from the back of the top 10. Taking full advantage of the comparably better tyre life and cornering agility of the Yamaha, Quatararo took the lead from Martin with only a few laps to go! Patience and clinical overtaking from the Monster Energy Yamaha riders earned them a great result, moving them into 2nd and 3rd in the standings respectively, only behind the hugely consistent Johann Zarco. Special mention goes to 16-year-old Acosta of KTM for a spectacular win in Moto3, the first of his career in fact, after starting from the pitlane! Remember the name: Pedro Acosta!
