- A little weekend racer

Look, There It Goes! It Is Headed Off To ...?

It is great when an old car gets a second life. A car can get a second chance with a new driver or someone looking to get back a piece of their youth. In some cases, the car could be getting a full-on restoration or maybe off to the a garage to get tuned up for use as a track car. In some case you just can't tell what's going with the cars and what is going to happen with them.

Case In Point, this VW MK1 Rabbit. Where do you think this car is headed?

One of the great things about writing articles for the DriveTribe Community is just how much more I am paying attention to the automobiles around me. While out on a quick shopping trip this weekend my son and I were watching the cars drive through the parking lot looking for some good car spotting posts when a truck drove past trailering this VW. At first, I was just going to post it as a spotting because of it's interesting paint job. Then my son asked me where it was heading. The more I thought about it, I just couldn't see a clear answer on this one. That is why I though that you all might want to weigh on the subject.

It's not completely clear what this VW actually is due the general poor condition of the car and missing badging but all signs point to it being a MK1 Rabbit possibly diesel. If this is in fact a diesel variant it came equipped with a 1.5L or 1.6L motor that put out 48hp - 52bhp depending on the model year. If this is the petrol variant it likely has 1.5L -1.7L power plant with 71bhp - 74bhp. The MK1 Rabbit isn't exactly a wide spread collectors car either. That is unless it’s a GTI, which I am about 90% sure this isn't. Would someone really go through a full restore of this car only get $5K - $10K, unlikely. It is also hard to imagine that it is getting any track time in its native form unless sporting a full-on engine swap. I just have a hard time imagining this thing putting in laps at the track. Although the car does appear to be sporting some rather wide tires and what looks to be a possible car number.

DriveTribe, what's your thoughts if you had seen this car being trailered, what would be your guess? There are a number of possibilities I know, but I will list off the obvious choices and see what you all think. Honestly, I am torn. I was originally thinking someone turned this into a little project car for the track but part of me thinks it might be an engine swap. I am just so confused, I mean look at that paint job. Let me know what option you think it is below or post your own thoughts.
