Lotus Head Avoids 102 MPH Speeding Infraction With Ridiculous Excuse

Amazingly, his excuse seems to have worked!

I'm going to assume this excuse only worked because Jean-Marc Gales is actually the head of Lotus, and that if someone like you or I were to try the same thing, it would backfire spectacularly in our faces.

Mr. Gales was caught doing 102 MPH in a 70 MPH zone but got off scot free because he was in his Jaaaaag. Just kidding, he managed to convince a magsitrate that in order to continue test driving new cars himself, he would have to avoid any further points added to his existing eight.

It was decided that Mr. Gales would simply have a 30 day ban slapped on him rather than adding more points. He was also instructed to stick to test tracks and avoid using the A11 to test cars.

On the other end of the spectrum, the director of campaigns at road safety charity Brake, Joshua Harris, said:

"Driving over the speed limit is selfish, reckless and endangers lives. There is no justification for travelling at the speeds demonstrated in this case and Mr Gales should count himself lucky that he did not receive an additional six points on his licence, resulting in a 12 month ban.

Excessive speeding is a menace on our roads and the law should be used to its fullest extent, making clear that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.”

  • While driving home from work one night, I got caught going over 100 mph on the Dan Ryan expressway by a Chicago cop. I thought I was going to lose my license, my car, and my job because of reckless driving. As the cop cussed me out he said, "I had to go over 100 to catch you!" While out of my mouth was a bunch of apologizing, in my head I thought "Cool." After he cussed me out, he got into his car and drove off. I drove the speed limit the rest of the way home.

    • My dad was riding his Triumph Tiger home on the last day of an week-long trip. He wasn't feeling real well and just wanted to get home. He was doing 90+ on the interstate when he passed a cop. Sure enough, the cop chased him down. He got out of his...

  • "I'm sorry, M'Lord, but I will be interviewing for a job on the Grand Tour, and had to brush up on my test drive abilities!"

  • Please don't quote Brake. If they had their way we'd all be driving around at 5 mph with a man with a red flag in front.

He didn't get away with it really, he did get a ban. I know of colleagues that have had this happen as well for 115 on the M11. In their case it was late at night with no one else on the road. Whilst that's not an endorsement of his behaviour there are times when driving at that speed is less dangerous. It's good to see that the courts are still able to use their discretion.
