Made from a 1981 Land Rover Series III

REC unveil a pair of watches inspired by (and made from) two iconic Land Rover models

Three years in the making but they're finally here. REC Watches unveil the RNR Rock Fighter and the RNR Beach Runner, made from salvaged components from a 2003 Land Rover Defender and a 1981 Land Rover Series III respectively.

REC Watches embody the perfect petrolhead connection when it comes to overlapping wristwatches and cars because their timepieces are made from cars. Literally. What they do is simple, they salvage components from cars undergoing restorations and produce watches out of them.

Both RNR models - their first Swiss Made watch - feature a 40 mm 316L stainless steel case paired with sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, both tips the scales at just over 100 grams and both come with 50mt water resistance. However, there are some significant differences between these variants.

RNR Beach Runner (1981 Land Rover Series III)

The 3-Piece 316L Stainless steel case in the Beach Runner is sandblasted, brushed and polished and features a rubber bezel. Underneath the dial beats a self-winding Sellita SW290-1 movement, vibrating at 28,800 VPH with a 38-hour power reserve with 31 jewels.

The exact weight is 110g, lug-to-lug is 48.20 mm, lug width is 22 mm and it comes with a black rubber strap (green strap is also available). The handcrafted dial is made from aluminium, cut directly from a 1981 Land Rover Series III.

Production is limited to 552 pieces, with a price tag of $1,795.

RNR Rockfighter (2003 Land Rover Defender)

Lug-to-lug, lug width and case size are exactly the same as the Beach Runner but the watch is marginally lighter, weighing in at 106 grams. The (hacking) movement is also slightly different, it's a self-winding Sellita SW200-1 , vibrating at 28,800 VPH. The power reserve is 38 hours and it has 26 jewels.

The aluminium dial is cut directly from a 2003 Land Rover Defender and the watch is paired with a desert canvas and black leather strap. Only 463 pieces, with a price tag of $1,795.

I've had some experience with REC Watches and in my humble opinion this is, cosmetically at least, their best watch yet. It is also their first Swiss Made watch and I know that makes a huge difference to a lot of people. If you don't own a Land Rover, this is still a great piece to add to your collection. If you DO own a Land Rover, well, this is a must-have.

  • As a petrolhead and a watch enthusiast, this does nothing for me.

It is a very forced attempt at linking cars & watches.

Having an old piece of bodywork as a dial has no extra value to me.

And the “Swiss made” label is not what it used to be, don’t be fooled.

    • Swiss Made means that 60% of the manufacturing costs etc must occur in Switzerland. And the movement is Swiss Made also. And the piece of legislation that sanctions this was written 28 years ago and updated last year. As for the idea, I think...

    • We’ve seen that “Swiss made” on the movement of Stuhrling watches, turned out they were Chinese movements.

So excuse me for being sceptical.

I know these watches have genuine Swiss movements, but as a package, they are not a value...
