Major Cigarette Company Still Sponsors A Formula 1 Team
Yeah, I thought that wasn't allowed anymore either.
At one point it seemed like every single racing team was sponsored by a tobacco company. McLaren, Ferrari and Penske were all sponsored by Marlboro. Gold Leaf and Johnny Player Special adorned Lotus F1 cars. Winston sponsored all of NASCAR with the Winston Cup. Camel sponsored F1 teams and the Camel GT series in America. It is something of a small miracle that every motoring enthusiast of that era didn't end up a smoker. Tobacco sponsorship were absolutely everywhere. Then, people started to realize that cigarettes are bad for your health and maybe they shouldn't glorify them on the sides of race machines especially if children are watching.
More than a decade ago most countries banned tobacco advertising which included companies on the sides of racing machines . Naturally no longer allowed to advertise their wares on the sides of race cars, no matter how cool it made them look tobacco companies, rather predictably, stopped sponsoring race teams. Nearly all of them pulled their funding because despite being a great many things tobacco execs aren't complete idiots. Fast forward to 2017 and you would expect the total of tobacco sponsorship to equal a grand total of zero. You would be 100% wrong in that assumption. As Phillip Morris makers of Marlboro cigarettes just RENEWED their sponsorship deal with Ferrari.
Sure, back in 2004 Marlboro got their money's worth with their sponsorship, but in 2017???
Let that sink in for a moment, in 2017 a major motorsports team like Ferrari is still receiving sponsorship money from a tobacco company even though it is against the law to display any tobacco based imagery on the side of any of the cars, any of the overalls, any of the branding, anything! Phillip Morris is paying Ferrari for what exactly??? This isn't something new mind you, as of 2010 Ferrari was forced to remove any and all tobacco based images from their livery. So why continue to throw money at them? I guess it is for the shock value as I just spend God knows how long writing up an article where I say tobacco roughly 12,000 times.
Side note does anyone else think that Vape companies should start sponsoring Formula E Cars?
