Halfway around the globe and the welcoming committee in NYC is ironing its black turtle necks and polishing its thick rimmed glasses. The millionth 911 is about to be treated to an evening of highly academic chit-chat. Luckily, it's all about Porsche.

The significance of the 911 is not lost on New York, a city at the cutting edge of global design and culture. And a city that embodies the very Porsche-alike ethos of work hard, play harder.

After the obligatory location shoot, our Irish Green 911 takes centre stage at the design forum featuring Jay Fielden, Editor-in-Chief of America’s Esquire; Tony Hatter, Director of the Design Quality Style department at Porsche; and Rama Corpash, a professor at the Parsons School of Design. Alongside them sit US racing legend and Porsche brand ambassador Hurley Haywood, and Michael Prichinello, the founder of the Manhattan Classic Car Club.

Cars from every era of the 911 are represented, with the first and millionth 911s bookending this select group of thinkers and drivers as they swap stories and theories about a car like no other. “It was great fun," mused Tony Hatter after the forum had ended. "You can really feel the enthusiasm for the brand and the car." Which is a relief, under the circumstances.

In truth, the goodwill has been evident everywhere. New York is the perfect place to unveil the millionth 911 to a US audience. It was here, after all, that America's love affair with Porsche began, when sportscar dealer Max Hoffman began importing the 356 back in 1950. The first test drives on American soil took place along Park Avenue, and now, nearly 70 years later, this milestone 911 is travelling those very same streets.
