The Silence of dogs in cars

Confined spaces for long periods of time, from a dogs point of view, can feel like a form of punishment. If you must insist on doing the big shop while your dog evaluates his bowel movements in your car, then you should definitely leave the window open.

Since a young age Martin Usborne has held this maternal fascination and overall affinity for animals – especially their plight at the hands of humans. Since 2012 however Usborne’s photographic integrity took him to the repressed musings of his former self, in an aptly name photo book entitled The Silence Of Dogs In Cars. Influenced heavily by the work of Hopper and Crewdson, The Silence Of Dogs In Cars comprises 41 images of dogs, struck by ample lighting, sitting solitary in cars. Usborne draws inspiration from his childhood – reflecting on a time he’d been left in a car alone while he waited for his parents.

“I don’t know when or where or for how long, possibly at the age of four, perhaps outside a supermarket, probably for fifteen minutes only. [..] I wondered if anyone would come back. The fear I felt was strong: in a child’s mind it is possible to be alone forever.”
