James May absolutely nailed the Le Mans battle between Ford and Ferrari in the first series of The Grand Tour, but now the same epic story is about to make its way to the silver screen. With a promising director behind the film and stars like Matt Damon and Christian Bale set to play leading roles, this throwback to the heyday of '60s endurance racing could be a corker.

A convincing car modifier? We shall see

First covered by Variety, it appears that 'Logan' and 'Walk The Line' director James Mangold has taken on the task of filming the Le Mans battle that arose due to a corporate mishap between the two companies. Matt Damon is touted to play the leading role of Carroll Shelby, with Christian Bale joining him as Ken Miles, Ford's test driver at the time.

The Ford engineers didn't half make an iconic shape

Back in the mid-1960s, Ford was set to buy Ferrari, but old man Enzo pulled out of the deal at the last moment, fuelling the fire for Ford to take on the Italians at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Using the expertise of legendary car tuner Shelby, the Ford GT40 was born and set about destroying the Circuit de la Sarthe year after year.

It's a cracking story – and one that absolutely deserves to make it into our cinemas – but if I'm honest, I think DriveTribe's very own Mr May did a cracking job himself.
