Matt Field wins FD Round 3 in New Jersey

Field, Forsberg, and Aasbo take the podium spots at Formula Drift Round 3.

Formula Drift's Round 3 in Englishtown, New Jersey was an eventful weekend. Formula Drift events are usually split between two days: A qualifying day and the main competition day.

On the qualifying day, about halfway through the evenings events Englishtown Raceway lost power due to storms in the area. Attempts to turn the power back on we unsuccessful and the night of drifting was called forcing the main competition day to be jam packed from 8 AM until past 10 PM, but it was worth it.

Though during day one they lost power due to storms it was generally dry on the track, but on competition day it was a wet one which let drivers who have skills in the wet shine.

Going into Round 3, the points leader was Aurimas β€œOdi” Bakchis, but only finished ninth at FD NJ getting bumped out by his "Frenemy" Matt Field. Field would go on to win the event and not only take first place at FD NJ, but first place in the championship standings.

Right behind Field was Chris Forsberg. Forsberg was fighting his car all weekend. He replaced the engine before qualifying, then had throttle body and alternator failures. He was forced to retire from the final battle against Field with electrical problems, but after going through all that he at least grabbed the second place on the podium. Fredric Aasbo took the last spot on the podium and grabbed third place.

FD NJ was also a first for one driver. Fan loved driver Federico Sceriffo won his Top 32 heat in his Ferrari 599 GTB "Fiorella" which means he advanced to the Top 16 in three years of FD competition.

After the dust settled with FD NJ the championship was completely shaken up. As we mentioned Field is sitting at the top with 258 points. Bakchis dropped one spot and is holding second with 232 points. Aasbo grabbed third at FD NJ and is currently holding third place in the standings with 223 points. Chelsea DeNofa is a smidge behind Aasbo with 219 points and in fourth place.

Formula Drift will return July 9-10 for FD Erie at Lake Erie Speedway.
