Max Verstappen is the hottest commodity in Formula 1 right now. Sure Fernando Alonso's future is still up in the air but Alonso isn't getting any younger. He may be the best driver in the world but for how much longer? Verstappen is 20 years old and is taking the fight directly to the top dogs at Mercedes. When asked about a potential future with Ferrari Verstappen didn't exactly do much to put those rumors to bed.
“I just want to be in the fastest car,” Verstappen told Sky F1. “I don’t dislike (the idea of driving for Ferrari) at all. I just want to be in the fastest car in Formula 1 because that means you can win races and that’s what I want to do.”
Despite their recent string of woes Ferrari was competitive with Mercedes. There is no reason to believe they don't continue that progression going forward. This makes them a very attractive seat in the future. Sprinkle in the prestige that comes with Formula 1's oldest and most successful team and you begin to see just how attractive a Ferrari drive is.
The question remains, is Verstappen trying to angle himself into a Ferrari seat or is he simply displaying the poorly timed honesty of youth? When asked about his young ace's potential move to Ferrari earlier this season Red Bull boss Christian Horner was clear in his response, "Total rubbish, propaganda. He has a contract with the team for '19. After '19 he is on the open market."
Where does this leave us? It would appear as though Verstappen is under contract for two more seasons. It seems pretty cut and dry, he is under contract so any Ferrari rumor has no legitimacy. However, this is Formula 1, a place where almost nothing is as it appears on the surface. There is always wheeling and dealing going on as one team tries to out do the other. Deals are done in secret all the time. I expect Verstappen to be in a Red Bull the next two seasons, however I would not be surprised in the slightest if he ended up at Ferrari during that time frame as well.
