Maybach is going to build a luxury SUV to rival the Cullinan and the Bentayga
Mercedes introduced the Maybach "Ultimate Luxury" concept at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show and now they're reportedly working on an actual production Maybach SUV which is going to be in direct competition with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and the Bentley Bentayga.
Not long ago, Daimler AG unveiled a plan to restructure Mercedes-Benz by dividing it into four distinct parts. Mercedes-Benz will keep building cars as per usual while the EQ branch is going to build electric vehicles, Mercedes-AMG will build performance cars and, last but not least, Mercedes-Maybach will build high-end luxury vehicles.
As the SUV market keeps expanding, Mercedes will almost certainly use the GLS as a base platform to build a super-powerful and super-expensive SUV under the Maybach nomenclature.
The Maybach SUV will receive significant cosmetic upgrades, both outside and inside, to set it apart from the standard car. A long-wheelbase version is also in the plans, and so is a V12 version, because the AMG V12 is somewhat of a flagship engine when it comes to high-performance luxury Mercedes vehicles.
After the demise of the 57/62 in 2012, Daimler has utilized the Maybach name for three vehicles: the S-Class limo, the limited-production S650 Cabriolet and the G650 Landaulet. The good news, or bad news depending on your point of view, is that the future Maybach SUV will drop the flamboyant design of the Ultimate Luxury concept, or the charm of the G-Wagon for that matter, in favour of a more conservative body style.
