McLaren 720s going cheap!

McLaren make some fantastic cars not least the 720s. Don’t get me wrong this is one of my all time favourite cars however used prices are in free fall. The car market in the UK has stagnated during lockdown with residuals broadly where there were 4 months ago, it’s as if the plate change didn’t happen.

I’ve been watching 720s prices over that period and found that the free fall experienced before has continued during lockdown, 4 months has seen £10k - £15k wiped off the value to the point that the cars are now only a VW Golf R price above the 570s price.

What’s more evident is that you can guess which dealers are selling on behalf of customers and which of these customers are desperate to get rid.

McLarens are known for reliability problems when they are sat for long periods of time (on top of the known quality issues) which will hurt values further. It won’t be long before the gap narrows a bit further and a fully fledged supercar like the 720s becomes attainable.

Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t stomach that level of depreciation and don’t believe they’ve hit rock bottom yet. The best course of action would be to lease a used 720s with a maintenance, warranty and tyre package and use it.

This is the best way into supercar ownership currently and really is tempting!

Food for thought.

    • Some redesigns by design houses I’ve never been sure about, I am however a fan of this Italdesign for the GTR and some of the Zagato Aston Martins.
