McLaren to enter Extreme E in 2022
A statement released to the press at midday confirmed the team's intention to enter the sport next year.
"McLaren Racing will enter a new chapter in 2022 when it enters into Extreme E" the opening to the statement said. The team will field an entry in the five-race electric rally raid series alongside such competitors as Lewis Hamilton's Team X44, Jenson Button's JBXE and Nico Rosberg's RXR team.
Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO said the company had been "following Extreme E's progress closely". He added that McLaren is "never afraid to push boundaries". Alejandro Agag, CEO of Extreme E commented that he is "thrilled to welcome Zak and the powerhouse McLaren Racing team" to the series.
The statement continued, saying "Extreme E will add to the diverse McLaren Racing portfolio, with Formula 1 firmly at the centre, together with INDYCAR and esports."
McLaren's Extreme E entry will be operated by McLaren Racing using both existing personnel from outside the Formula 1 programme and additional specialist resource
The series kicked off this season and has so far visited Saudi Arabia and Senegal for the Desert and Ocean X-Prixs as part of the sport's goal to raise awareness of global climate issues.
In late August, Extreme E will take to the icey plains of Greenland for the Arctic X-Prix. Rosberg X Racing's Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor currently lead the championship by 14 points.
