The Porsche 911 is a rolling testament to the stubborn brilliance of the Germans. Hanging the engine out the back is hardly the ideal engine placement but God bless them they have kept at it for decades. Culminating in the current 991 911 which might be the perfect sports car. However back in the 70's Porsches were more than a handful to drive. In fact, the rear biased weight distribution led to understeer and then snap, uncontrollable death-dealing oversteer. So naturally Men bought them to show off the enormity of their man bits.
Other companies tried the rear engine idea and predictably, abandoned it in favor of more conventional layouts. That didn't stop the Communists from giving it a go. Cheklosovakian car company Skoda, built the 130 RS and quite proud of their creation decided to dub their car the "Porsche of the East." They were serious about it too, they even took it Rally Racing.
The surprising thing was the 130 RS turned out to be a good little race car. The 1.3-liter race prepared 4 cylinder revs up to 8,000 RPM and produces an impressive 140 horsepower. Combined with a 720 kg weight and the little car was a pocket rocket. The 130 RS Won 1st and 2nd places in its class at the 1977 Monte Carlo Rally. Not too shabby for a car with the engine in the wrong place and built by comunists.
The 130 RS got you intrigued yet? Good news an actual original race car (so the seller claims) is for sale on eBay. The car is being auctioned from a place I can't pronounce, Lietavska Lucka, which is in Slovakia apparently. The price? At the present moment, the price is 54,000 Euros (which is a hair over $61,000). That is a lot of coin to part with. However, if you find Porsches to be a bit too common but love the idea well then look no further your dream car has arrived!
