We’re excited to announce the arrival of two new performance models for the 718 series, both of which come equipped with our latest six-cylinder engine. The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0. share the same 294 kW (400 PS) four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine that powers the recently released flagship 718 Spyder and Cayman GT4. Via a six-speed manual transmission, both cars can sprint to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, on their way to a top speed of 293 km/h. The engine redlines at an impressive 7,800 rpm and, thanks to the standard sports exhaust with dynamic damper control, it also delivers on the aural drama of its six-cylinder siblings.
This twin pipe sports exhaust system, with integrated gasoline particulate filter, also comes straight from the Spyder and GT4. Its saddle-type design has created space for the contrasting black rear lower section that has been developed specifically for the GTS models.
All-round usability is key to the GTS, and as with the Spyder and GT4, the powerful new naturally aspirated 4.0-litre unit, an evolution of the twin-turbocharged engine in the new 911, is also exceptionally efficient thanks to adaptive cylinder control that alternately switches off one of the cylinder banks at low loads, direct fuel injection with piezo injectors and a variable intake system.
Standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, as well as a 20 mm lower ride height and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited slip rear differential, ensure that the new GTS 4.0 enjoys exceptionally precise and agile handling, but marries this with suspension settings that are suitable for everyday use.
Other standard equipment includes performance-orientated components such as Porsche Stability Management (PSM) with separately selectable PSM Sport mode, the Sport Chrono package including the upgraded Porsche Track Precision App and Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM), which increase rigidity under heavy dynamic load without sacrificing ride comfort during normal driving.
Visually, both the new GTS models follow the same design theme as their four-cylinder forebears, with 20-inch light-alloy wheels in Satin-Gloss Black. Contrasting details around the cars carry on the distinction, with the black spoiler lip, all-black air intake within the Sport Design front apron, darkened front fogs and rear light lenses and the redesigned lower rear bumper.
Those wheels are shod in ultra-grippy high-performance tyres (235/35 ZR 20 at the front and 265/35 ZR 20 at the rear) and shroud an uprated brake system, which features cross-drilled discs and red callipers. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) is available as an option.
Inside, motorsport-derived Alcantara® is the dominant theme. This is used for the centre panels of the standard Sport Seats Plus, as well as the steering wheel rim, centre console, gear lever and armrests on both doors. In the fixed-head Cayman, it also covers the A-pillars and the roof lining.
The optional GTS interior package adds another colour: a choice here between Carmine Red or Chalk. This appears on the rev counter, seat belts, all decorative seams including the embroidered GTS emblem in the headrests and the Porsche lettering on the floor mats. Other trim elements around the cabin are made of carbon fibre.
Like all current Porsche models, both the 718 GTS 4.0 models come as standard with a wealth of onboard technology, including Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen and the Sport Chrono package, including the enhanced Track Precision App. This smartphone app, which finds its origins in our motorsport programme, shows performance-related data on the PCM display while in race track use and records it for later analysis. The online navigation module, meanwhile, with its real-time traffic information, voice control and Porsche Connect are available as options, as are a BOSE® Surround Sound System and Burmester High-End Surround Sound System.
The new generation of GTS offers a remarkable balance between performance and everyday usability. And with the addition of its new six-cylinder motor, promises an unparalleled aural experience in the 718 range. Both models will be available at German dealerships from the end of March 2020.
