Meet the new Porsche 911 Carrera and Targa GTS!
Porsche's long-awaited middle ground 911 models have been unveiled
Since the sixth generation 911, the 997, Porsche has offered a 911 that sits right in the middle of the sporty Carrera/Carrera S and ludicrously quick Turbo and Turbo S: the Carrera GTS. Also offered as a Targa and Cabriolet, the Carrera GTS is a sportier example of the Carrera that also packs a mean punch. Today, Porsche introduced the 992-generation 911 Carrera and Targa GTS models.
Although it uses the same 3.0L twin turbocharged flat six taken from the Carrera S, the GTS' power outputs far exceeds the Carrera S. It turns out a respectable 473 horsepower and 420 pounds feet/torque. That means it has 30 horsepower and pounds/feet more than the S. Even compared to the previous GTS, the output is 23 more. As you may have thought, the acceleration is much quicker than any S or GTS.
The Carrera GTS coupé manages a sprint to 60 in 3.1 seconds with the PDK transmission (a manual option is available, of course) making for an obvious gain over the 3.5 second Carrera S. Similarly to the previous GTS, rear and four wheel drive options will be available for the Carrera and Carrera Cabriolet, but only four wheel drive for the Targa GTS.
The suspension for the Carrera GTS models is derived from the Turbo models, with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as a standard. That means it is 10 mm lower than the Carrera S. The only model that doesn't get the Turbo suspension is the Targa GTS, which gets the regular Targa 4S suspension system. More 911 Turbo parts that made it to the GTS are the center lock wheels, taken from the new Turbo S.
Porsche has also engineered weight saving techniques including the new "Lightweight package" making it a full 55 pounds lighter than standard. This includes carbon bucket eats, lighter glass, a lighter battery, and no more rear seats.
Pricing is as follows: Carrera GTS: $138,050, Carrera 4GTS: $145,350, Carrera GTS Cabriolet: $150,850, Carrera 4GTS Cabriolet: $158,150, Targa 4GTS: $158,150.
Porsche expects the first Carrera/Targa GTSs to make it to the US in early 2022.
