Meet the VW Atlas Tanoak

Or maybe not...it depends on Ford

The proposed commercial bakkie, based on the large seven-seat Atlas SUV, is a co-operation between Volkswagen and Ford. Unnamed sources at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters reported to motoring.com.au that the most likely way the Tanoak would enter production would involve switching it from its MQB underpinnings to Ford’s T6 ladder-frame platform, coming from the Ranger. Therefore, we can make the assumption that the VW Tanoak is not designed to take on the F-Series. No, this bakkie will be focussing on competing against the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma.

So, let us assume this happens, Ford would then most likely end up building the Tanoak in North America. No doubt this bakkie will be expensive to build because of the extended Atlas architecture.

Furthermore, carmag.co.za reported that in August 2018, Volkswagen hinted that the VW Atlas Tanoak was looking more and more likely, with the automaker “carefully” studying the business case of a joint-venture with Ford.
