Mercedes announce AMG GT R Pro will be revealed at LA auto show
At next week's LA auto show, we can expect to see a brand new AMG GT range topper in the form of the track-focused GT R Pro. Here's all the details...
Mercedes has just declared their line-up for next week’s LA Auto Show, and amongst many cars that I’m sure will be lovely, there is one that will excite petrol heads more than the rest: a limited-edition AMG GT R Pro.
As things stand in the AMG GT line up, the GT R version sits at the very top of the range. With the 4L Twin-Turbo V8 turned up to 577bhp, it’s not only the most powerful variant, but also the most stripped back and driver focused. Capable of lapping the Nurburgring in 7:10.9, it’s an exceptionally well rounded package.
The GT R Pro version however aims to be even more hardcore. Utilising features inspired by the AMG GT3 and GT4 racers, it’s a car that will belong primarily on the track. From the single photo Mercedes has released, we can expect it to produce more downforce than before thanks to the additional aero touches at the front. Combine that with chassis tweaks and more power, and it should be an absolute riot.
The GT R Pro will be introduced alongside the rest of the GT range - all of which have been updated in order to draw the sports car’s association closer to the 4-door super-saloon. While that’s all very interesting, it’s the GT R Pro that forms the centrepiece of their stand at LA this year.
For a while now, spy photographers have been capturing pictures of a camouflaged AMG GT R pounding around the Nurburgring. With Mercedes boss Tobias Moers previously hinting that a faster “Club Sport” version of the AMG GT R was in the works, it was thought that the camo’d car was the Club Sport. And indeed, the Pro fits that niche.
