Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review
See what the world’s journalists think of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class
For years, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class set the benchmark for midsize luxury sedans. The 2018 E-Class raises the bar even higher, and continues to outperform in terms of quality, luxury, and comfort. The E-Class is available as a sedan, a coupe, a cabriolet, and an estate car, with the highest performing option being the Mercedes-AMG E63 S.
Here are the best video reviews of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, including a summary of the pros and cons from each one.
VIDEO 1 - KELLEY BLUE BOOK
Zach Vlasuk from Kelley Blue Book describes the E-Class as having all the cutting edge technology, design, comfort, safety and innovation of the flagship sedan in a smaller package compared to the full size S-Class. Overall, the E-Class is spectacular and continues to outperform all the other cars in its class.
Interior
The E-Class looks similar inside and out to the S-Class. The materials look like they belong to a car worth well over USD 100,000! The Mercedes-Benz center console is well thought out and has excellent button placement. The front seats are comfortable and luxurious, but retain considerable heat on hot days. It is recommended to get the ventilated seats option. The moon roof cover also lets in a small annoying patch of light that hits your face.
Driving
Everything about the E-Class appears and acts as if it was from a larger and higher class sedan. The 9 speed transmission is super smooth and even if you don’t get the optional air suspension, the ride quality is still spot on. The base model 4 cylinder engine is more than adequate for the car, and it does not sound, idle, or feel like a 4 cylinder engine. There are also a range of engines larger than that, with the most powerful engine belonging to the super saloon AMG E63 S with around 600 HP.
Practicality
There is lots of headroom and space in the rear seats, alongside rear climate controls and optional power sunshades. Split folding rear seats are easily transformed and help offer considerably large storage space that wouldn’t be out of place in an SUV. One downside is that the steering wheel is annoyingly placed slightly to the left of the optimal position, but the excellent handling and feel makes you forget that.
Tech
There is a single pane dual display, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay but no touch screen. Other features include LED headlights, navigation, rain sensing wipers, 5 drive modes, automatic braking, ambient interior lighting, 360 degree camera system, and autonomous lane change assist. It is recommended to get the front seats with the massager option.
VIDEO 2 - MERCBENZKING
MercBenzKing enjoyed the quality of the interior and the new technological features. He focuses a lot of time reviewing and appreciating the design of the exterior and the tech options.
Interior
Everything about the interior is high quality. From the leather seats to the real wood dashboard to the sporty, flat bottomed steering wheel, the E-Class has it all. There is also 7 way seat adjustment including thigh support and headrest for the front occupants. There is excellent legroom in the rear seats, but your head might slightly touch the roof if you are taller than average.
Driving
The E-Class comes with steering assist, parking assist, intelligent driving, and much more. The E43 AMG engine sounds beautiful and provides an amazing level of performance. The engine is exciting and responsive, with great control and excellent handling from the suspension.
Practicality
For accessibility and awesomeness, the E-Class is first to come with the newly designed Mercedes key. This key lets you open and close all the windows and sunroof while you are outside the car, by pressing and holding the lock or unlock buttons. The boot can easily be opened and closed with your foot. And there are 2 handy USB slots and 1 SD card slot in the centre console.
Tech
There are optional 360-degree cameras, which provide full views of all around the car. The steering wheel has two different touch pads, one for the left infotainment screen (in front of the driver) and one for the left, in the middle of the car. The E43 AMG also includes the heads up display, which projects the speed into the windscreen. The Burmester sound system is exceptional.
VIDEO 3 - DOUG DEMURO
Doug DeMuro reviews the 2018 AMG E63S wagon in this video. This family estate car does 0-60 in a ridiculous 3.4s and has 600HP. He describes the AMG E63S as the “coolest station wagon in history" and even has an older 2012 model as his own personal car (maybe he's biased).
Interior
The AMG E63S has beautiful interior seats, and the wagon version has a large rear cargo space with electronically assisted rear folding seats. The increased cabin insulation and heat absorbing membrane are options to improve the interior comfort and reduce road noise.
Driving
This car comes equipped with a twin turbo V8, 9 speed automatic transmission, and standard 4 wheel drive. It has cylinder activation and will shut off cylinders to help save fuel depending on how you are driving. It has a beautiful exhaust note, blistering acceleration and wonderfully sharp handling. The transmission is smooth and the paddles feel great!
Practicality
The front seats are heated, cooled, and adjustable in 7 different ways. The car even has auxiliary sun visors, so that if you use the sun visor to block the sun to the side, there is another available to use on the front.
Tech
There is a mobile backup camera that is right above the license plate. It even folds away to remain hidden when not in use which cleans up the look of the car. Some other tech features include an electronically assisted fuel door, intelligent LED light system, and 6 different camera views providing 360 degrees of visibility. The infotainment centre is controlled with either the steering wheel, the dial in the centre, or the touch pad just behind the dial.
VIDEO 4 - CARWOW
Mat Watson from Carwow sums up the E-Class sedan as lacking in the fun factor, more expensive than its rivals but also super luxurious and relaxing to drive. It is available with diesel, hybrid or petrol power. The 4 cylinder engines are fast enough and powerful enough for the car, so there is no need to shell out money for the more expensive 6 cylinder options.
Interior
According to Mat, the design and feel of the interior is just like the S-Class, and is one step above all its rivals. He warns that not all models come with the dual digital displays, and recommends steering clear of the black trim as it does scratch easily. The 6 cylinder engine model gets you the higher quality interior and the dual displays as part of the command system. This system is pretty good, however it is not as easily used as the systems available in the Audi and BMW.
Driving
If comfort is your main priority, the E-Class is top of the line. However, its focus on comfort leads to sacrifices on aggressive performance and handling. There is an option where you can choose to upgrade to optional air suspension which is recommended. The car has limited road noise and isolates you from the outside world due to its excellent aerodynamics and good sound insulation.
Practicality
There are plenty of cubby spaces in the interior, and overall the cabin is very spacious. There is tons of space even for tall people. The middle seat is quite narrow, but not awful as this car is probably the best car for back seats in its class. It also has the biggest boot in its class. The shape of the boot is a bit annoying though, and you have to pay extra for split folding rear seats.
Tech
The E-Class is available with NFC on the doors, so you can use your phone to unlock and lock the car. The car can even be summoned from the parking space with your phone! There is a high definition reversing camera and electric seats also come standard.
VIDEO 5 - CAR GURUS
Clifford Atiyeh from Car Gurus reviews the E-Class Coupe in this video. According to Clifford, the E-Class leads the pack in comfort, luxury, and technology. However, it is more expensive, much heavier, and less sporty than its rivals.
Interior
The interior is the most beautiful part of this car. The attention to detail in the E-Class is outstanding. Even the air vents are notably beautiful, and the inlaid wood trim is subtly tasteful. The ambient interior LED lighting is fully customizable with 64 different colours to set the perfect mood for all of your driving adventures.
Driving
All E-Class models come standard with a 4 cylinder. All models also come with the terrific 9 speed transmission, and some have optional 4 wheel drive. According to Clifford, the 4 cylinder engine lacks the punch you want with a car this size, so the 6 cylinder is the better choice.
Practicality
The E-Class takes on a new level of practicality as it incorporates massive doors with roomy back seats. Many features which were once options on older cars are now standard such as heated seats, navigation, etc. Visibility is great and the head lights are excellent but, the automatic high beams don’t react fast enough. Another downside is that depreciation is high for these cars, especially the AMG models.
Tech
There is so much technology packed into this car that it would take days to describe it all! The infotainment centre gives you the ability to customize an insanely large amount of interior features, such as configuring how the speedometer and tachometer are displayed. The advanced safety/driving features basically assist you with everything! There is active lane keeping assist, drive assist, active steering assist, etc. It is not fully autonomous though so you should note that these features are more of an aid than anything else.
