Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

A homage to the 300 SLR racecar.

Took this picture back when I was too young (8 y/o) to even know the importance of this Mercedes. All that amazed me were the butterfly doors and that's why I snapped this picture. Browsing through old pictures, I saw this and was FREAKIN’ amazed!

About the car: ‘SLR’ stands for ‘Sport Leicht Rennsport’ (Sport Light Racing). It was a homage to the 300 SLR racecar. Developed in cooperation with the British McLaren (hence the name and fender badge), it produced a staggering 617 bhp, 780 Nm from its 5.4 supercharged V8. The production of the grand tourer was limited only to 2,157 units as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG soon succeeded it in 2010.

  • That Merc is gorgeus! I have a little story how I saw one of those.

It was a hot summer day in Moscow, I was walking through a carpark to my car, and I saw an SLR parked there, and I remember thinking "Holy crap, thats that McLaren Mercedes hyper car, God it looks amazing!" A couple of hours later I was sitting in my Moskvich 214145 Svyatogor in a very long line of parked cars, I've spent hours sitting there waiting for my mates who needed some paperwork to be done in a police building we were parked next to. It was very hot, and I thought I'ld open my door for some fresh air. Thank God I looked in my wing mirror before doing that! Because what I saw was that very SLR from earlier on going past that line of parked cars I was in at about 30-40 mph, and it was not more then 15 feet behind me. If I wouldn't have looked, and just opened the door, that $500 000 hyper car would have certainly crashed into the door of my rusty Moskvich which was worth not more then a thousand dollars.

That was 10 years ago, and I still don't even dare thinking how much would the damage of the Merc's front end would amount to if it would have smashed into my door. Ohhhh no, don't want to think about it

    • I've always been very curious about Moskviches. So what exactly this the 214145 Svyatogor?

    • It was a 1998 Moskvich in rusty white, this version had a 2.0L F3R Renault engine with 113 bhp. AZLK, the makers of the car, were broke at the time, so some of these cars had their own old engines installed, and some had that two-litre unit, which...

  • I have some interesting insights on the SLR. There was one shipped in from Monaco to my Baltimore area dealership and I'm friendly with the shop foreman, so I got to examine it extensively and he took me out in it and gave it a thrashing. It was quite strong. I have a CL 55. The SLR had similar muscle, but like it was on steroids. On the SLR they move the intercoolers out of the hot engine V and up on the sides to cool them better. More power, less heat soak. The interior featured a dash that was mostly from the C-class. Not very high-end. However, one exec at a different dealership told me that his first one went for $100,000 over the original $450,000 sticker. Michael Jordan had or has one. Tiger Woods bought a second one for his now ex-wife. One hell of a car.

  • When I looked at "The Most Popular Order" graph I was surprised that so many people have that wrong! 😎

    • Regardless of the rest of the 300 SLR would have to be first. It was the most iconic racing car of my youth and I wanted one since 1964 or even earlier
