Mercedes-Benz To Invest $1 Billion To Build Electric Cars In The United States

The announcement was made at the plant’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

While the expansion process will start from 2018, the production of electric vehicles won’t begin before 2020. Furthermore, Mercedes hasn’t mentioned which electric SUV(s) will be made at the facility. However, we expect the production to start off with company’s first electric car — the EQ C mid-size SUV. It was previewed as a concept model (image above) at the Paris Auto Show 2016 and will make its market debut in 2019. Competition includes the Tesla Model Y and the upcoming BMW X3 EV.

At present, Mercedes makes the GLE-Class SUV (including the coupe variant), the GLS-Class SUV and the C-Class at its Alabama plant. Total production for 2016 was 310,000 units and a bulk of the SUVs were exported to over 130 countries. The capital investment at the facility is $4.5 billion till 2016 and the employment figure stands at 3,600.

Mercedes’ Electric Plans

Along with BMW and the Volkswagen Group, Mercedes is bound to be one of the leaders in the impending shift towards e-mobility. The company’s electrification project includes making Smart an electric-only brand and also offering several pure-electric models under its “EQ” EV division. Overall, there will be ten full-electric models on sale by 2022 — and these are in addition to the hybrid and mild-hybrid variants that will be offered across the entire range.
