Mercedes C63 will probably lose the V8
One of the greatest noises in new cars may have its days numbered
(found on Autocar) The Mercedes AMG V8 is a great staple in modern performance cars. Loud and brash, extremely powerful and put into unsuspecting saloon and estate cars, it makes an amazing sound and yet manages to be smooth and manageable when your not flooring it. However it seems its days might be limited as it seems the C63 (and 43) will use a 2.0l turbocharged M139 4 cylinder.
Little bit of backstory
The Mercedes V8 has always upheld a status of power and noise, making more power then competitors and generally being a performance metric, something to point to and say to your non-enthusiast friends "that'll blow the doors off a Porsche ya know", starting with the supercharged E55 AMG, which was a 5.5L engine, which while the world was in awe of the M5s then impressive 394hp, came out with 463 HP. The AMG version of the C class however made due with a 3.2L V6, but even that was a decent performer at the time, however overshadowed by the E46 M3, but then, in the mid to late 2000s, Mercedes made a monster, a 6.3L naturally asperated V8 producing over 450 HP and shoved it into the little C class.
The result was a family rocket ship that made a soundtrack to match. In 2015 the next C63 was to have a 4.0 L V8, which although not as bonkers was still a potent engine, making 469hp or 503hp in C63s trim. It was the end for the last letters meaning anything, keeping the 63 to designate it as the top trim AMG. It was still a V8, and thanks to some exhaust trickery, sounded the business too.
So what's the big deal?
Outside of boxer form it is near enough impossible to make a 4 cylinder sound like a V8, so there is not going to be a true C63 sound coming out the back, and since the C63 is such an important car in this segment, and lets face it will sell because its has a Mercedes badge on the front, it might open the flood gates for everyone else to do the same. it also may start another engine change which has slowly creeped by unnoticed. the unification of performance engines. this makes it so that the entire set of performance cars share the engine with a different tune for different levels, which is great, except the C43 is also getting the same treatment, and why would you by the C63 when a flash tune could match the C63 power numbers? Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, i mean the 4.0 was shoved into damn near everything short of the A class, and probably would have if they could have made it fit, but making everything into a hybrid turbo four pot, especially when the new M3 still comes in RWD, Manual and straight 6 trim, seems like a quick move for Mercedes. now the engine comes out of the A45, with a hybrid system attached.
There are spy shots (couldn't find any that were free to use) that show the styling will go towards the new design language of the Mercs. Overall, it will probably be an alright car to the people that just want speed, except, the tesla model 3 performance will probably be faster, so if your not in for the sound what are you in for, the badge? You can get the C43 and still say you have an AMG and make the same power with some fettling. For the German performance saloon? The M3 has always been a more balanced car, now matching in power and is going to make a better sound. It does make you think, why would you buy a 4 banger C63?
