Mercedes confirms that the EQA will be its next electric vehicle
Mercedes continues to expand its range of EQ electric vehicles. The brand considers this range as a whole, just like the AMG sports and Maybach luxury ranges. Thus, after the EQC SUV and EQV MPV, Mercedes will soon unveil the third member of the EQ family. It will be a small crossover about the size of the GLA.
According to the official teaser illustrating the article, this future small model will be called the EQA and will be the electric version of the GLA compact SUV. The vehicle will feature many aesthetic elements such as the raised body and similarly shaped windows. The EQA will be introduced in 2020 and will be positioned under the EQC.
What is surprising is that the EQA Concept presented at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show was intended to prefigure the series production EQA. But the concept adopted a traditional hatchback body style closer to that of the A-Class. Since then, it seems that Mercedes has been intending to make an SUV because of the high demand. The electric version of the A-Class will therefore have to wait a little longer.
Mercedes isn't the only one to make massive use of SUVs to quickly develop its electric range. Jaguar and Audi are doing the same with their I-Pace and E-Tron. For now, the trend is towards electric SUVs, so be prepared to see more and more of them hitting the streets before the sedans return.
