Mercedes had to recall 200+ EQS models due to an infotainment glitch
I can feel your "I told you so", I can hear it
If you hate giant infotainment screens, you're gonna love this: Mercedes had to recall 227 EQS models and a couple dozen S-Class models because of a software glitch affecting the cars' infotainment system. To put it simply, the software that runs the MBUX system is supposed to deactivate some features of the screen - the TV and the internet for example - while you're on the move but, well, it wasn't happening.
Fixing the glitch was quick and easy, a software update did the trick, but this is more fuel for the fire that people who deem infotainment dangerous are trying to ignite. I personally find them useful, most of the time, but sometimes automakers overdo it, and rather than fitting a regular screen for the sat-nav and the radio, they fit a huge screen with a bunch of things including, that's the case here, internet browsing and videogames.
As standard, the EQS and the S-Class share the same software and the same 12.8-inch display but the EQS can also be equipped with a 56-inch 'Hyperscreen' that basically consists of three displays merged together to cover the entire centre console and the dashboard, including the instrument cluster.
What do you think? Should car makers dial it down a notch and make smaller screens, or should they simply make better screens?

Why, color me surprised.
TV and internet on the move? I bet you this recall will have the lowest response rate ever :)
How about they make no screens?
not a realistic option. In today's market, with today's technology, making a car with no infotainment screen would be like making a smartphone with a physical keyboard
I know, I was being sarcastic. However, it would be much nicer and still make a lot of sense for the cars that were pared back in terms of technology and designed for enthusiasts to go without them.
I still want the physical switches. Gives me a sense of security.
I personally have never seen the issue with basic controls ie knobs and buttons. You can find them quite easily by either muscle memory so to speak or a quick glance. Modern dashboards have a sub menu within a sub menu just to turn the temperature up and I personally think they are an accident waiting to happen. You’re not allowed to use your phone while driving so how are these infotainment screens any different
Totally agree.
