Watch Mercedes' new Digital Lights talk to pedestrians:

A few months back, Mercedes-Benz announced its new Digital Light technology, which it claimed at the time would revolutionise headlight technology by bringing a whole new dimension to the simple world of headlights.

In recent days, the above video was released, along with a few more details about the innovative feature. It seems that as well as projecting basic icons and symbols onto the road, the Digital Lights will be able to produce longer, more complex messages in light form.

As well as giving out compliments, this technology (assuming it works with the sharpness and reliability it does in the promo) could prove extremely beneficial for road safety purposes.

Digital Light allows hazard warnings, directions and the suchlike to be broadcast onto the road in front of the car, drawing the driver's gaze away from the instrument cluster and onto the road.

The precision and clarity of the messages displayed is possible thanks to technology that utilises over a million micro-reflectors within a lighting chip inside each headlamp, resulting in a resolution of over a million pixels on each side.

The Digital Light system features on the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

  • How long until people hack it and make it draw a bunch of dicks

  • If you’re somehow in danger while in your car, say someone’s trying to carjack, it should display the bat symbol and alerts Batman

  • lets hope this never gets into production. Auto makers, if you need to highlight anything for the driver, there's a heads-up display. Nobody else wants to see changing symbols on the road, especially in difficult conditions
