Mercedes has killed off the SL63

This comes after the death of the V12 SL65

There will be no more SL63 for 2020. This comes after the sad news of the death of the V12 powered SL65 AMG last year. The SL will lack an AMG version or the first time since 1995.

This is most likely due to poor sales, and the AMG GT Roadster eating up the marketshare. They fill the same role, except the SL63 is more low-key and stealthy.

Rumors were spreading that the SL63 would be axed, but PR Specialist at Mercedes USA has confirmed the news to CarBuzz that "we do not have MY20 SL63." For those of you who don't speak PR, MY stands for model year, meaning the 2019 model year is the last one available for the SL63.

Personally, I liked the Sl63. It was stealthy, a really fast car that can blend in with the crowd unless people heard the roaring exhaust note. It's sad but understandable that the SL has met its demise. It will be missed.

  • I hope this strategy pays off in keeping the SL in production. The popularity of AMG models meant the GT and SL overlapped somewhat. Now they'll be distinct models with each their own demographic.

  • I mean it is sad, but what's the point of keeping it if there were already the S63 convertible and even the AMG GT C and R roadsters?

    • I believe next SL will be BMW's first TRUE Benz competitor for the 2-door 8 Series/M8
