- This is the only CLA that Mercedes have made relevant now.

Mercedes have made the CLA almost pointless

Next thing you know, they'll be making a CLA compact

Earlier this week I saw two cars (both white) parked near each over in a KFC car park, one was an 18' plate CLA and the other was a brand new A200d sedan. Now looking at them both I couldn't help but wonder what was the point of the new A class when the CLA is practically the same (mechanically it's identical) They're not the only ones doing this but to me the A Class is the best/worst example in recent times.

The CLA is better looking from the front but the side profiles are almost indistinguishable from each other to the uninitiated. I can't understand why anyone would walk into a Mercedes dealership and say "I'd like a CLA that's slightly more dull" the prices aren't even that different either.

Fair enough in the UK at least there isn't any proper A45 AMG sedans (yet) so if you want one of those then a CLS makes sense for now. But spicy ones aside, given the Renault Megane running gear, they drive the same. Sure people will say this version of the A Class is direct competition with the Audi A3 or the China only 1 series, but the CLS was already a good contender for that.

The interior shots above should hit it home most of all, you sit in either car and you'll not know the difference. However the more I think about it, the more I'm left thinking the CLA may not be the pointless one. The Shooting Brake model makes sense in the sector it's in and in CLA45 trim it's the only competition for the Golf R Wagon. But if the CLA isn't pointless it just makes the A Class not just pointless instead, it's a waste of money.

  • The funny thing is, that Mercedes does this bullshit in the E segment as well. They've got the AMG GT four door thing and the CLS wich are both in the same class using the same architecture while they've got the conventinal non hatchbackE class in that segment as well.

    • Forgot about the GT 4 door and CLS, and the more I think about it the more I realise it's worse than I thought. They even gave the GT 4 door the option of a smaller engine found in the CLS.

Fair enough if they sold them in separate markets but they...

    • I do wonder how long the german manufacturers can continue to sit in any miniscule market niche they can think of. Anything in the modern automotive world indicates that streamlining the product range is the way to go, except the 100th...

  • I have also always been confused by this car. The tipping point was when I tried to sit in the back and discovered there is no head room whatsoever. I’ll stick to an S class.

    • You mean the CLA or new A Class (I'm guessing both, which is precisely the point) 😉
