Mercedes have made the CLA almost pointless
Next thing you know, they'll be making a CLA compact
Earlier this week I saw two cars (both white) parked near each over in a KFC car park, one was an 18' plate CLA and the other was a brand new A200d sedan. Now looking at them both I couldn't help but wonder what was the point of the new A class when the CLA is practically the same (mechanically it's identical) They're not the only ones doing this but to me the A Class is the best/worst example in recent times.
The CLA is better looking from the front but the side profiles are almost indistinguishable from each other to the uninitiated. I can't understand why anyone would walk into a Mercedes dealership and say "I'd like a CLA that's slightly more dull" the prices aren't even that different either.
Fair enough in the UK at least there isn't any proper A45 AMG sedans (yet) so if you want one of those then a CLS makes sense for now. But spicy ones aside, given the Renault Megane running gear, they drive the same. Sure people will say this version of the A Class is direct competition with the Audi A3 or the China only 1 series, but the CLS was already a good contender for that.
The interior shots above should hit it home most of all, you sit in either car and you'll not know the difference. However the more I think about it, the more I'm left thinking the CLA may not be the pointless one. The Shooting Brake model makes sense in the sector it's in and in CLA45 trim it's the only competition for the Golf R Wagon. But if the CLA isn't pointless it just makes the A Class not just pointless instead, it's a waste of money.
