Mercedes maintains its leadership in the premium segment in 2019
Mercedes is once again the leading premium brand in terms of sales. The star brand delivered 2.34 million cars worldwide in 2019. This is an increase of 1.3% compared to 2018. BMW takes second place with 2.17 million cars sold, an increase of 2.1%. Audi closes in third place.
While the generalist brands sometimes encounter sales difficulties in certain markets, the premium brands are in quite a different health. Their sales are not falling at all and in some countries that are fond of luxury cars, the results are very positive. This is particularly the case in China, where sales are rising sharply.
Mercedes sold 693,443 cars in China in 2019. Sales were up 6.2% compared to 2018. China is by far the fastest growing market for the star brand. Thanks to the very good result in China, Asia is just ahead of Europe with 978,000 cars compared to just under 938,000. The coming year should be even better.
BMW also expects an increase in sales in China compared to 2019. In Europe, sales are expected to decline and in the United States, they should increase, very slightly. Audi, for its part, intends to catch up with Mercedes and BMW with its recently revised line-up.
