Mercedes is testing a pair of new rear wing rain lights in the Barcelona in-season Formula 1 test this morning with Lewis Hamilton driving. The two vertical red lights are fitted on the end plates of the rear wing.

It is working in tandem with the original rain lights situated in the middle of the rear structure. Testing gives a chance for the teams as well as the FIA to run new devices whether for safety or car improvements.

The team is helping the FIA to gauge more data which is designed to allow for a better visibility in rain-affected races. Should the design work according to the plan, it could only feature on the F1 cars from the 2019 season onward.

The rear light is used up for two purposes under the current regulations. It is lit up in the rain, while also when the driver is harvesting power through the MGU-K when circulating around the circuit - which works as a warning to the driver behind of reduced speed of the car ahead.

Mercedes added: "For everyone asking, this is just a trial light set-up for better visibility in the rain!"

  • Hmm, I wonder if this is because the halo makes the original single light difficult to see?
