MG powers up compact SUV range with ZST

THE MG ZS range has a new top dog, with the launch of the ZST marking the introduction of two new premium variants, powered by a 1.3-litre turbo donk.

Delivering 115kW of power and 230Nm of torque, in what is essentially a model within a model range scenario, the ZST offers the latest MG Pilot safety technology, improved styling, safety and performance, with its new power plant mated to an AISIN 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel efficiency has also been improved to 7.1-litres/100km, while the top speed shifts to 185km/h. The new ZST rides on 17-inch two-tone machined alloy wheels with red brake calipers, running on Michelin 215/55 R17 tyres for peak performance.

Set to go on sale from mid-September, the new model will be offered in two variants, the ZST Excite and range topping ZST Essence. Both are offered with a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty and 7-year roadside assist package as well.

“The all-new ZST offers our Australian customers segment-first value and refinement, with elevated levels of comfort and a list of impressive features usually only available in the premium vehicle segment,” MG Motor ANZ CEO Peter Ciao said.

“This new nameplate does more than just add a ‘T’ to our popular MG ZS range, it was designed to raise the bar and stand out in the crowded small SUV segment,” he added.

“The MG ZST will have great appeal to savvy buyers seeking the very best in value, style and technology, and will place every owner in the spotlight for their friends, colleagues and families.”

The 2021 MG ZST follows the refined and advanced styling of the recently introduced MG HS, most notably, the signature front grille, emphasised by a slick black gloss finish, delivering eye-catching style and perfectly framing the iconic MG badge.

The look extends across the exterior elements of the vehicle including mirror covers and side sill inserts. Sporty front and rear bumpers round out the exterior design, matched with front fog lamps, front and rear smoked LED headlights.

Inside, the vehicle boasts superior shoulder, hip and headroom throughout the cabin. Comfort for all vehicle occupants is top of mind for MG, with the ZST featuring premium soft-touch materials throughout the cabin.

These include synthetic leather upholstery and seats, leather wrapped perforated steering wheel and gear selector, front leatherette centre armrest and two rear ISOFIX attachment points.

Up front the drivers cabin receives two USB Ports in the centre console (one for connectivity), plus a high-mounted USB conveniently positioned in the rear view mirror casing. Two USB points have been built in the rear of the cabin too.

The top of the range ZST Essence offers front occupants heated seats, allowing passengers to select and control the climate that suits them best. For further refinement, six-way adjustable electronic seating has also been added for the driver.

With a class leading 1.19m2 panoramic stargazer sunroof in the Essence, occupants become part of the journey, whether that’s experiencing the bright city lights or the starlight from the country.

New technology includes key-less start, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluetooth, all delivered through a large 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system situated front-and-centre of the dashboard.

Finally, the ZST Essence features a seven-inch fully virtual digital dashboard, with built in-navigation to ensure the best possible driver experience – an MG first. Safety systems are here in abundance too.

MG Pilot includes nine advanced driver assistance systems, including forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, traffic jam assist, intelligent cruise assist, blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert.

There’s also intelligent headlamp control, speed assistance and adaptive cruise. To ensure the driver has a full and unimpaired view at all times, the ZST comes standard with an impressive 360-degree camera with an integrated parking monitor.

Both the Excite and Essence are available in two standard non-cost colours; York White, Pebble Black, plus a range of metallic paint options that includes Brighton Blue, Diamond Red, Sterling Silver.

The 2021 MG ZST Excite is priced at $28,490 plus on roads, while the ZST Essence can be had for $31,490, again plus on roads. The standard ZS range, which is powered by a 1.0-litre turbo engine, now starts from $21,990 drive away.

  • WOW! Another SUV for school run. This time it's made by none else but Chinese government run company and, hopefully without asbestos gaskets! Now, this is to much of excitement. I better go back to something mundane and boring, like Spy photos of forthcoming M3 Touring or Z4 with manual transmission.
