Miller dominates at Le Mans! Grosjean takes his maiden Indycar pole & podium!
All the action from ELMS at Spielberg, MotoGP in France, and Indycar at Indianapolis
As avid fans of so many different motorsport series like F1, MotoGP, WRC and more, we wanted to share our love of racing on 4 (or 2) wheels in our own unique and often hilarious way. Every Tuesday we will be releasing a new video discussing all the key moments from the previous week’s motorsport, so you can stay up to date about all your favourite championships! This week for our latest video we talked about all the important moments from ELMS at Spielberg, MotoGP at Le Mans Circuit, and Indycar at the Indianapolis Road Course with plenty of banter thrown in there too!
European Le Mans Series
ELMS had another fantastic weekend of racing, with WRT Racing taking another outright victory in the LMP2 class with Deletraz, Kubica and Ye behind the wheel, with both G-Drive cars completing the podium at the Red Bull Ring. It wasn’t completely plain sailing though as the weather took a dramatic turn with around 90 mins to go, causing more than a dozen cars to aquaplane off the circuit, many of them narrowly missing the barriers and gingerly rejoining to live another day. With two consecutive wins to start the season, WRT are in a commanding position at the top of the standings, as are the LMP3 leaders Cool Racing who also took victory in their class! AF Corse took the chequered flag in GTE ahead of the two Proton Competition cars, putting the Ferrari up to 4th in the standings after a difficult opening race at Barcelona!
MotoGP World Championship
MotoGP moved to Le Mans last week with the two Monster Energy Yamaha’s of Quartararo and Vinales taking a 1-2 in qualifying, and Jack Miller joining them on the front row. However, it was Miller who got the best start on this Ducati and proceeded to battle it out with the two Yamahas, until the rain came in. The entire field came in to swap their bikes, Miller getting himself 2 long lap penalties for speeding, with Rins and Marquez making crucial mistakes of their own in the treacherous conditions. Despite the penalties, Miller rapidly closed in on the race leader Quartararo and passed him midway through the race. As Quartararo suffered with his tyre wear, Miller rode away at the front and Zarco began to reel in the Frenchman, eventually taking 2nd place with only a handful of laps remaining! Championship protagonist Bagnaia also finished strong, crucially moving up to 4th position in the dying stages of the race and keeping himself very much in the fight for the rider’s title!
NTT Indycar Series
As the Indycar circus moved to its namesake, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Ex-F1 driver Romain Grosjean in only his 3rd race in the championship took pole position for Dale Coyne Racing on the Indy Road Course. Grosjean nailed the start, led away from the front and quickly opened up a sizeable gap to the more experienced drivers behind like Harvey and Newgarden. Unfortunately for Harvey, he suffered a slow stop and puncture to put him out of contention for a podium. Despite Romain’s best efforts to stay in the lead until the chequered flag, Rinus Veekay of Ed Carpenter Racing made the most of the undercut onto softer tyres to move past him on the 45th lap of the race! From that point it was an easy victory for Veekay, beating Grosjean by 4.9s at the finish, but the incredible achievement from Romain to take his first Indycar podium so soon after his recovery cannot be underestimated!
