Modern Ferrari 250 GTO/SWB mashup gets go-ahead, will have V12

It will not be made by Ferrari and they cannot legally intervene

Only a brave soul would dare to recreate Ferrari's greatest and most valuable car of all time: the 250 GTO. From 1962 to 1964, a total of just 36 examples were made for the entire world with one car selling for an insane $70 million USD in 2018. Of course, not everyone has access to those sorts of funds or is willing to maintain a 60-year-old Ferrari so one company has decided to revive the 250 GTO with some modern flair. Meet GTO Engineering, the company who are ready to put "Project Moderna", their 21st century 250 GT SWB with 250 GTO styling cues, into production.

Will it be a hybrid with some crazy DCT gearbox?

Absolutely not. The vehicle will feature a quad-cam V12 and a manual transmission for maximum driver engagement. GTO Engineering is committed to create a vehicle under 1,000kg (2200lbs) that will provide a "visceral experience in and out of the car". The car will be built on a custom 'muletto' chassis and will maintain a traditional tubular steel chassis with aluminium subframes for maximum strength.

It's track only though, right?

Nope! This modern 250 GTO-inspired SWB is said to have ample in-car storage and will be able to seat two in comfort. GTO Engineering's previous projects, including the 250 GT SWB Revival, have all been road legal. There is no evidence to suggest that Project Moderna will be restricted to a Sunday track day.

Why should I trust GTO Engineering?

They were established in the 1980s and have been working with Ferrari dealers for decades on everything from engine-building to repairs; they are not some Silicon Valley youth startup with boundless ambitions. The renders you see are not mere fantasies but are actually ready to be put into production. GTO Engineering have given the green light and are ready to accept orders from interested customers.

How will Ferrari react to this?

Insert joke about Ferrari sending their infamous cease and desist letters here. It all comes down to the fact that Ferrari lost their trademark rights to the 250 GTO last year. Yes, even you can create a dodgy replica in your very own garage, call it the 250 GTO and not have old Italian men in suits and ties taking you to court.

How much will it cost?

No news on pricing but be prepared to pay in kidneys. GTO Engineering's 250 GT SWB Revival had a base price of $1m USD and it took up to 18 months to produce one car. I say "base price" because only the brand's clientele were able to know the full price.

  • Are those images what the final product will look like? Because that's quite explicitly a 250 SWB tribute rather than a GTO.

    • It definitely resembles the 250 SWB more than the GTO so it might be a mix of both. It's got the bonnet and side vents from the GTO. Also I think the render's proportions might be slightly off.

    • Yes, I did notice the vents and little accents. I just find it odd how they've applied those to a SWB body rather than make a flat out Series 1 or 2 GTO replica. Shall wait until it's unveiled though before final judgements.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read, some time ago, that 250 GTO was considered a piece of art. This way, reproductions aren't allowed. That's why the sketch looks like a Berlinetta Passover Corto. They can't produce a GTO

    • I suppose they can call it the 250 GTO since the trademark is gone but cannot create an exact copy of the car. Well said!

  • Not to be a buzzkill but the original gto is officially a piece of art so Ferrari may not hold the trademark but it's still illegal to replicate it but i think this version is alright (cause it's not a 1:1 copy)
