Most boring circuit in the world set to become a bit less boring
Often criticised for its lack of overtaking opportunities, Abu Dhabi has approved a new layout plan for their F1 circuit.
After an uninteresting race last season, promoters of the Abu Dhabi GP agreed to consider altering the circuit to make it more entertaining for fans at home. Plans to improve the circuit have finally been approved and the new version of the Yas Marina Circuit will be ready for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 12 December.
Abu Dhabi is without a doubt one of the most important races on the calendar. This is because the Grand Prix is the last race on the F1 calendar; the best stories need the best endings… but the Abu Dhabi GP is considered to be one of the worst races. This is due to the lack of overtaking which takes place at the circuit which is why last year’s Abu Dhabi circuit was incredibly boring for most fans.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took his first and only win of the 2020 Season at the Abu Dhabi GP, a highlight for many, however the race itself was rather uneventful. The starting grid was almost identical to the final results which basically meant the Grand Prix was a 305km long formation lap.
At the end of the 2020 season, McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo said: “I certainly don’t want to talk the place down, because I want to keep coming back here, because it is amazing.
But maybe we could play around with the layouts. I know there is a few alternatives maybe around here, because unfortunately on Sunday, it is tricky.”
Last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took place without fans however the Yas Marina Circuit will be open this year, just not at full capacity.
