Moto2 Rider Narrowly Misses Being Hit and Run Over In Portugal

I'm writing this report with a calmer, clearer mind. But believe me when I tell you that I nearly lost my mind completely when I saw it live.

Aron Canet (bike 44) low-sided at the crest of the blind, downhill run to Turn 8 at Portimao during the Moto2 race held there and slid all the way to corner entry, where he proceeded to be a ragdoll participant to a blink-and-you'll-miss game of Frogger.

Five riders in a row went past him at full speed as Canet was trying to skid-scrawl away from the live track, rolling past the kerbs just before a sixth rider blitzed by. It's wicked terrifying.

But we've had this sort of close call before.

Back in August in Austria, Enea Bastianini high-sided out of the race, but his bike was left on the track, too late for Hafizh Syarhin to recognize before colliding into it. Both riders, miraculously enough, made it out unhurt, however, and carries on racing even up till this weekend.

It goes to show just how wicked 2-wheel racing can get at its worst, and why the racing seems to carry higher stakes.

      • In a year that saw both factory Yamaha riders in MotoGP nearly get wiped out in Austria, this seems tame by comparison. Yet there's no race where at least one rider doesn't crash in MotoGP.
