The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports has confirmed that the 2020 MotoGP season will not start with the Spanish GP as the race has been postponed due to coronavirus pandemic.

After weeks of silence since the last information of the postponement of the Argentina GP, MotoGP has now confirmed that the 2020 season won't start with the Spanish GP on May 1-3 weekend at Jerez, as the grand prix has been officially postponed.

With the situation in Spain worsening due to coronavirus pandemic, this was inevitable and only needed final confirmation from the FIM, IRTA and Dorna. This pushes the 2020 MotoGP season by another two weeks - as things stand.

While it is not confirmed if it will take place on time but French GP is the next race on the MotoGP calendar on May 15-17. The situation in France is not good either and so we may be in for another postponement. F1 has already deferred its calendar until mid-June.

In the meantime, ESports is now taking center-stage. After hosts of single-seater racing adopting the measure and with F1 also joining in, MotoGP confirmed its 'Virtual Race' for this weekend with handful of top riders already confirmed to compete.

The short statement from MotoGP read as:

"The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports regret to announce the postponement of the Red Bull Gran Premio de Espana, which was set to be held at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto from the 1st to the 3rd of May. The ongoing coronavirus outbreak has obliged the event to be rescheduled.

"As the situation remains in a state of constant evolution, a new date for the Spanish GP cannot be confirmed until it becomes clearer when exactly it will be possible to hold the event. A revised calendar will be published as soon as available."
