Happy birthday, Murray!

3y ago

Today is the 95th birthday of an F1 legend, for many, still THE voice of motorsport, the one and only Murray Walker OBE.

To mark the occasion, we take an affectionate look back at some of the more famous Murrayisms.

Happy Birthday Murray!

1. There are seven winners of the Monaco Grand Prix on the grid today and four of them are Michael Schumacher.

2. Only a few more laps left and then the action will really begin, unless this is the action, which it is.

3. This is a very interesting circuit because it has inclines, which go not just up but also down as well.

4. Nigel Mansell is slowing down now, he is taking it easy. Oh no he isn't! It's a new lap record!

5. Murray: Look! Look! Flames coming from the back of Gerhard Berger's McLaren! James Hunt: Murray, they're not flames, it's the rear light.

6. This was indeed a great season for Nelson Piquet, as he is now known and always has been.

7. The car out in front is unique, except for the one behind it, which is identical.

8. With half of the race gone, there is still half of the race to go.

9. Do my eyes deceive me? Is Ayrton Senna's Lotus sounding rough?

10. And Patrick Tambay's hopes, which were nil before are zero now.

11. Unless I'm very much mistaken... I AM very much mistaken!

12. Andrea de Cesaris, the driver who has won more Grands Prix than anyone else without actually winning any of them.

13. As you look at the first four, the noticeable thing is that Michele Alboreto is fifth.

14. So, Edson Arantes di Nascimento, commonly known as Pelé, hands the trophy to Damon Hill, commonly known as Damon Hill.

"Damon - fancy starring in a Pizza Hut ad with me?"

15. And now I'm going to stop my start-watch.

And finally, THAT interview with his partner-in-crime, Nigel Mansell:

What's your favourite Murray memory? Did you ever meet him? Let us know in the comments...

  • Unless I'm very much mistaken - everything that Murray Walker ever said was pure gold - expect the bits that were absolute shite (and they were pure gold as well) .

  • "I don't make mistakes. I make prophecies which immediately turn out to be wrong."; "There is a dry line appearing in the tunnel. Obvious, really, as it has a roof"; "The atmosphere is so tense you could cut it with a cricket stump!"; "Nigel Mansell - the man of the race - the man of the day - the man from the Isle of Man."; "And now the boot is on the other Schumacher."; "They're now on lap 68, which means there's one, two, three, four, five laps to go before the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix."; "And he's done that in a whisker under 10 seconds, call it 9.7 in round figures."; "Into lap 53, the penultimate last lap but one."; "Rally points scoring is 20 for the fastest, 18 for the second fastest, right down to 6 points for the slowest fastest."; "Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The man with all the luck, and it's all bad."; "He (Jackie Stewart) will not produce a winner, but if he can produce second, it will be the next best thing."; "If I was Michael Schumacher...which of course I am not"

  • The best one was 'I don't make predictions, I make prophesies that immediately turn out to be wrong'

  • Happy Birthday Murray! Around 15 years ago, Murray wrote a book, titled simply, Murray Walker. In his book he had a bucket list. He had always wanted to compete in Targa Tasmania. I was working with Toyota Australia at the time when I was approached by one of Australia's best racing car drivers, Colin Bond. Colin suggested we run a car in Targa for Murray, Colin said he would drive. Colin spoke to Murray about the idea, he immediately accepted.

So Colin was the driver and Murray the co-driver, in a Toyota Camry V6, of all things. They managed to pass a lot of much faster cars on the special stages. Murray did admit for most of the time he just sat there and watched Colin drive like a master. I spent nearly two weeks with Murray and his wife Elizabeth. There are too many stories from that event than there is room to tell here. All I can say is Murray is one of most professional people I have ever worked with. More importantly, he is one of the most wonderful people I've had the privilege and pleasure of working with. He is a true inspiration. I had a tear in my eye when it came time to say goodbye. Thank you Murray for making the world a better place.
