My Formula 1 companion

And in many other aspects of life, obviously...

Formula 1 is a most fascinating, extremely complicated, exceptionally glamorous, and thoroughly enjoyable sport to watch, and without a doubt is one of, if not my favorite sports. It is also, without a doubt, far more enjoyable to follow when there is someone to share it with. The person in question is my girlfriend, Mallory, who has adapted Formula 1 as one of her favorite sports entirely on her own (okay maybe that isn't fully accurate); however, she really does enjoy watching with me.

Initially, she enjoyed the characters of the sport, like Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo, and the primary reason for enjoying watching was hearing interesting things about their lives, and hearing their interviews. Most notably Seb's interviews, who is usually comical when talking to the press.

But that grew into caring about where a driver finished on a race weekend, and what implications that had on their championship; she was interested in Claire Williams, Toto Wolff, and after watching "Rush," was a huge fan of Niki Lauda; being always excited to see him in the Mercedes garage. Mallory also shares my adoration (at maybe a lesser level) for the late great Ayrton Senna, after learning of his dedication to the sport and his country. She adopted my fan-ship of Mercedes, and we have been lucky enough to watch three years of Mercedes' incredible dominance, after years of Red Bull making it look easy.

She's always excited to see Niki Lauda.

It further grew into looking forward to watching every qualifying and race session, no matter the time of day, as the races in Asia are at 2 or 3 in the morning here in New York. Mallory would then give me her predictions of who would be on the podium (these predictions usually accurate), based on qualifying performance, and slightly biased by who she wanted to see in the top three (who isn't?). Not only does she care about the sport, and enjoy watching it, but we chat about the politics of the sport, the path that it's taking, our opinions on what is working and what is not, what drivers will move to which team during the "Silly Season," and fantasizing on going to a race weekend.

I can say that without her, being a Formula 1 fan would be less enjoyable, and I cannot express how grateful I am to have a companion like her with which to watch this amazing sport.

I do not own any of these pictures.
