It's late in the night, 12AM to be precise and I hear a revving V8 in the distance and I know it can only belong to a Holden owning hooligan or Bogans as they are known colloquially. I also realised that my humble tribe for all my articles and rants has crossed 100 members. So to commemorate this special occasion, I have written this article. Normally I write about the various happenings in the motoring world and other topics that trouble us car people. However, this article is different, to reward you all and thank you for putting up with my thoughts, I have written this special piece for you that features some automotive eye candy. Enjoy!
5- 5.0 litre V8 from the Ford Mustang
In number 5, i chose the 5.0 Litre V8 found in the 2017 Mustang because it is currently on the market. Generally though Ford V8s need to be given a special mention, especially those found in the Mustang as they are widely known and loved by petrolheads all over the world. Also the Mustang is one of the most iconic cars out there, the Mustang brand is about as old as Lamborghini, that's crazy! I tip my hat to Ford and the geniuses who have kept this brand and that sweet V8 going through the years.
4- 4.2L V8 from the Maserati GranTurismo
Now the Mustang's V8 sounds great and looks quite nice too. But really, can it beat the V8 found in the Maserati GranTursimso? I don't think so, on this occasion the Italians do it best and if you've ever heard the roar of a Gran Turismo V8 you'll know what I speak is the truth and only the truth! It really is one of the best sounding V8s of all time if not the best and just look at it, isn't it gorgeous?
3- Alfa Romeo Busso V6
Firstly, just look at that engine, imagine the care and the attention to detail that went into it. The intake pipes are chromed and the lettering is stylised and wow it is just beautiful! This engine was arguably Giuseppe Busso's biggest achievement. Nicknamed the Busso V6 for reasons unknown, it was found in everything from the GTV6 to the 147 GTA with production lasting around 3 decades. The 156 was the last Alfa to feature this engine before production was stopped and a new refreshed 3.2 litre V6 found its way into the Alfa Romeo 159. This engine is probably the best sounding V6 out there and probably the best looking as well.
2- Lamborghini V12s
The V12 in the picture belongs to the famous Lamborghini Murcielago, the first car made under Audi's ownership and it turned out to be a masterpiece. If you take a couple of steps back and look at Lamborghini V12s, they are just brilliant. Yes they have been engineered to beat Ferrari's V12s but they are so much more, they have a unique sound and they give the car its soul. Sure Ferrari makes nice cars with nice engines but they don't evoke the kind of feelings you get when you drive a Lamborghini or experience one in any way, shape or form. Lamborghini is special and its engines need to be too. As an ode to my favourite manufacturer, I have placed the long line of Lamborghini V12s in second.
1- Porsche flat 6
After all the iconic engines I've mentioned, it seemed like a tall order to find one that stood out from the crowd and one that has stood the test of time. I knew there was one and after much searching I settled on the famous Flat 6 engine that Porsche has used in its cars through the years. The Porsche flat 6 is a special engine, it produces performance stats found in cars with much larger engines and given its relatively small size it is nothing short of an engineering miracle. Th Porsche flat 6 still surprises me to this date with its ability to punch miles above its own weight. First seen in the 356, the flat 6 has now become an essential part of the company. It is found in every 911 car currently on the market in a different form and it has found its way into many cars in the past as well. I think this engine takes the cake for me as the most iconic engine of all time, for its sheer versatility and longevity.
Special mentions go out to the RB26DETT found in the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R, the 6.0 Litre V12 found in the Ferrari 599 GTB, the 4.5 litre V8 found in the Ferrari 458 Italia, the 2JZ 3.0 Litre V6 found in the Toyota Supra and the 6.5 litre V8 (396) that Chevy used in its muscle carsin the 70s!
