Discussion About Nudity And The Depiction Of Women On Drivetribe

Following heated discussions about nudity and particularly the approach to depiction of women in photos on the Drivetribers live chat channel we have decided to take a proper look at this issue and would like your thoughts and feedback. It is a *very* emotive topic so please do respect everyone's right to an opinion even if you completely disagree with it. Add your comments to the bottom of this post or join in the live chat at drivetribers.com

Drivetribe is a social network and like Tumblr, Google image search, Reddit and Twitter it is nearly impossible to both identify and ban all pornographic content. It is also a challenge to have hard rules for what is pornography unless it is hardcore material.

We do have rules in our T&Cs that limits what people can post which have been derived from other social network standards and we do attempt to remove offending material when it reported by users or identified by our image analysis system as unsuitable due to a high porn (or gore) score, Check out drivetribe.com/terms

It is a challenging area as some people like this sort of content - and of course, some people really hate it.

Our proposal, for discussion, is the following:

- Ask Tribe Leaders who own NSFW (not safe for work) tribes to add that hashtag to their tribes. If they do not we ban the tribe.

- Remove tribes that are NSFW from the Tribe Discover page completely

- Remove NSFW posts and NSFW tribes from the side panels on posts for recommended tribes and trending posts

- Allow NSFW to be found by searching the site but, by default, blur both the tribe header images and image posts within the tribe. If the user wants to unblur the images then they can

This is an attempt to balance both groups of users - those that want this sort of content, and those than do not want it. It is a similar approach to sites such as Reddit.

  • This is supposed to be about all things on wheels, right?

    there's your answer.

  • To an extent, this is about the double standards that some people, predominantly men, have around nudity. In the pre-DriveTribe days, some members of a FB group I belong to started posting the typical cheesy shots of naked or near-naked women draped over cars, which wasn't what I was hoping to see on a car site. I found that posting pictures of naked men on motorbikes brought this to a swift end, because suddenly the same blokes were giving it all the 'Eww! We don't want to see that!' When I told them I didn't care, because I did want to see it (and several of the other women joined in), they realised the discomfort they were feeling was something we (the female members of the group) got to feel on a regular basis, and to my surprise, the posts stopped.

But DriveTribe is too big to spam every tribe that posts these kind of images with sexy photos of naked men, and anyway, this is supposed to be an automotive site. It's also supposed to be a pioneering social media platform, and it's intended to reach a much wider audience than other motoring platforms traditionally have. But we're all grown-ups, so I'd suggest that as well as requiring tribes to identify themselves and taking steps to ensure these tribes don't appear on the landing pages newcomers to the site arrive on, you give us the option to opt out of NSFW posts ourselves. If there's a requirement (and/or an algorithm) to identify sensitive posts, then if we can also go into our settings and toggle them to say we don't want to see those posts, we can't complain if we can't be arsed to click it.

  • Using women to get views and clicks means the content is sub par.

Permitting it to be used for views and clicks cheapens the site.

Car culture already has an issue with alienating women by objectification. For a new site in 2017, not discouraging groups dedicated to pictures of women with cars in them to pass it off as car culture is reprehensible.

    • Look up Josh Crady - appears like someone under age using the site as a peep show!

  • I'd like to start by linking you to the discussion on Boy Power about this issue, as several people have already expressed some good points there:

Next, I agree with Marcus that not every little of bit of nudity is evil, however there is a line between artistic and objectifying. The majority of the 'women draped over cars' images on drivetribe are definitely on the objectifying side of the line, and I feel like this gives the impression that the only purpose of women in motoring is as decoration. Drivetribe is, or is hoping to become, a place to start out for many young petrolheads and is that really the view we want to give them?

So, I'd support the proposition as is, and if it all goes tits up (pun intended), it can always be changed later.

  • Keep it simple. The site is about cars/transportation hopefully with quality content. Keep it that way and keep and moderating simple. I'm not interested in seeing scantily clad men draped over cars. Just say no.
