With a history both on rugged farms and on the drag strip, the Chevrolet C-10 is probably one of the most iconic pickups in American culture. It seems the company associated with the bowtie logo is looking to resurrect the recognisable look of the C-10 with its latest concept, the E-10.
Why ‘E’ I hear you ask. Well, climate change deniers, skip the next paragraph as the E stands for electric. In fact, under the Australian Ute style rear end is a set of two 400-volt batteries powering a pair of Chevrolet Performance concept electric crate – or eCrate – motors that turn the rear axle.
Unlike most electric drivetrain designs, the E-10’s motors sit under the bonnet, at the front of the car and are connected to an automatic transmission that sends the power to the rear wheels. Chevrolet has also gone to the effort of setting up speakers that will blast V8-esque sounds while the car is running. Clearly, this concept is trying to convince the more resistant of us that electric mobility is the way forward.
Even the actual electric motors could be confused for a real V8 engine to those that don’t spend their weekends under cars.
One thing the electric powertrain can’t hide is its instant torque and impressive acceleration. With the equivalent of 450hp at the driver’s disposal, the E-10 concept can hit 60mph in around 5-seconds and will complete the standing quarter mile in just over 13-seconds.
As it’s designed to look like a modern rendition of the C-10 pickup, the E-10 is a very good looking car. On the whole, the shape is quite simple and uniform while the individual design features such as the LED lights do a great job of modernising the classic style without overpowering the emphasis on electrification.
