The estate car as a bestseller
Since its launch in 1959, the Czech automobile company has produced more than six and a half million units. In recent years, the third generation of the large compact class model with around 400,000 sales worldwide accounted for around one third of ŠKODA's total sales. The OCTAVIA COMBI plays a major role in these success figures: almost two thirds of the OCTAVIA sold are accounted for by this body shape. The OCTAVIA is the best-selling station wagon in Europe and the most popular imported car in Germany.
The new generation
Therefore ŠKODA AUTO will launch the latest generation of its bestseller first as a station wagon (2nd quarter 2020), the limousine will follow a few weeks later.
The new OCTAVIA will be available from market launch in the Active, Ambition and Style equipment lines. During the coming year, both the robust OCTAVIA SCOUT and the sporty OCTAVIA RS will complement the range.
The new generation is 22 millimetres longer and 15 millimetres wider than its predecessor. The trunk volume has increased from 600 to 640 litres.
The interior concept has been revised and offers even more space for passengers.
As the first ŠKODA model, the OCTAVIA offers a head-up display. This projects important information such as the speed or navigation instructions directly on the windshield in the immediate field of vision of the driver, who can thus capture this information without looking off the road. The Virtual Cockpit has been further improved. The screen of the the latest generation of the digital and individually configurable instrument display has a diagonal of 10 inches and the operation has been made even more user-friendly.
For the first time, full-LED-lights are used in all variants and the top version even features intelligent matrix-LEDllight.
New engines and shift-by-wire technology
A total of three new diesel engines in the OCTAVIA cover a power range from 85 kW (115 PS) to 147 kW (200 PS). The TDI engine has a displacement of 2.0 litres and comes from the newly developed EVO generation, which emits up to 80% less nitrogen oxide.
A particularly environmentally friendly natural gas variant (G-TEC) is also available. The 1.5 TSI engine delivers 130 hp.
In the variants with DSG transmission, the new OCTAVIA is the first ŠKODA ever to use shift-by-wire technology. The speed step selection is no longer made mechanically, but via a new operating module with a small rocker.
Innovative assistance systems
In the fourth OCTAVIA generation, numerous new assistance systems are used, some of them for the first time in a ŠKODA model. The new avoidance assistant actively increases the driver's steering torque in the event of an imminent collision with a pedestrian, cyclist or other vehicle, thus helping to prevent an accident in the ideal case by means of controlled avoidance. The exit warning system indicates to the driver that another vehicle or cyclist is approaching from behind before the door is opened.
Three chassis options and adaptive chassis control DCC
In addition to the standard chassis, the OCTAVIA has two further chassis to choose from: a 15 millimetre lower sports chassis and a 15 millimetre higher ground clearance chassis. The DCC adaptive suspension control system, which continuously adjusts suspension and damping and offers various driving modes in the Driving Mode Select driving profile selection, is available as an option.
Can the 4th generation of the Octavia continue the success of its predecessor?
